Maiden Flight
My best friend let me try out this simulator he uses to practice for flying his Mongoose up in Moorpark. We took a roadtrip since I had expressed an interest. Apparently, a bunch of guys gather there on any given weekend to play. There were no other women in sight- at least, not on the field. There was one sitting in a car looking bored out of her mind.

Call it beginner’s luck but I took to flying immediately, met the owner of Airstar AND wound up training with him. Talk about a crash course in RC everything! The simulator did not prepare me for the rush! How can someone put into words the joy of discovery, the fear of failure and the tension of being an amateur in a group of seasoned men? I might have looked out of my element, being the only woman, but I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I was totally hooked. The last toy I had was a Malibu Barbie! All I want to know is- when I'm proficient on the simulator and the boys tell me I’m ready- can I get one in hot pink? Might be the first!

I got to watch one being built too! Ohmigod!

lol. I'm afraid you might have to custom paint one yourself if you're looking for hot pink

As you've already noted, they're not really marketed toward women

Cool to hear we have another with a needle in the vein. There aren't enough chics in this hobby. Welcome to RR!
If it can't hover, it ain't worth flying.

Welcome Mat
Thanks for rolling out the welcome mat, Rotormonkey! Hey, if I got to paint it myself I'd have an Asian dragon or a pirate flag- on a hot pink background! LOL, right now I'm just trying to get my bearings straight while I'm up there. Not easy.

Pink?!
Damper...ScottV...and misfits0311- thanks for supporting the color pink. Funny: I don't own many pink things.

I will need A LOT of help and it's really nice to know I won't be voted off the island. Thank you! That youtube video was interesting. (I don't think I'll be doing much of that any time soon. LOL)

Don't make me crash.
Mr. Helibeast,

Does my name SOUND like I'd ever be intimidated by anything? LOL.

Is that the "underwear coping trick" from the Brady Bunch? I'll most definitely try to take your advice if I'm ever in a pickle but, with my luck, I'd probably wind up crashing. Some of you guys are real lookers!

Geeks?!
No such thing! They're an urban legend... I wanna know everything! I wanna know all the technical terms too! Thank you FBoss, for the warm welcome. I'm thrilled, I can't even begin to tell you. And I get to fly tomorrow. WOW!

I'm considering starting a flight chronicle:

-all the accidents
-advice
-troubleshooting
-contacts
-triumphs

It might be entertaining for all the senior helimen, no? Newbies might learn something from my MISSadventures, what-not-to-do's and commentaries from visitors.

P.S. FBOSS, geeks CAN be hot.

Thats a good idea. Lots of us keep flight logs, I do. It helps keep track of what parts are new, how many flights on a given component and skill progression. I actually have a build log that I use to make sure whats been done and whats left undone. I have found that at first I didnt "trust" my heli. Once I "trusted" it my skills and willingness to push it increased rapidly. Trusting my heli was/is a function of knowing it wont fly apart and that is a function of building it right and KNOWING it has been built right.
Learning curve ahead young lady

Flight Chronicles
Since my maiden voyage was technically not a solo flight, I will be posting all of my most current flight adventures here:

http://hydrophoenix.blogspot.com

Please comment there if you'd like. I really would appreciate any and all insight, advice, warnings, experiences etc. I'm gonna be joining the "Women Pilots" forum here. I'll benefit from training on the simulator, training in Moorpark and reading runryder sub/topics all together.

I'd like to put together a compilation of "1st Time Crash & Burns" so PM me your stories if any of you get a chance. This could be fun(ny)!

Can't wait till tomorrow. I'll be flying if weather permits. YAY! I've been dreaming and daydreaming about tomorrow. Am I sick?

terminology challenged!
What's FPV?

...and what kind of proof did you have in mind, P.Testa?!

Anyway, if FPV is really bad, Maestro Josef won't let it happen. He's too good! I'm in safe hands.

FPV = first person view. Most ppl put a wireless cam on their heli, and hook up some VR glasses to their laptop and fly as if they were in it.If it can't hover, it ain't worth flying.

Just to clarify some (I assume) Rotormonkey ment most people who fly FPV use.........as opposed most people who fly Helis. Since FPV flight is a small portion of Heli fliers. Again and as dangerous as it may be, I am assuming what he meant.....RIP ROMAN

lol. Yeah I know of only one person who actually does it. I did mean most guys that fly FPV do it that way.

Personally I don't see it as especially dangerous. As long as you're keeping away from populated areas. And I don't know about there, but in Canada, you have to have a spotter on a buddy box that can take over if you lose it. Meaning it has to stay within visual range.
If it can't hover, it ain't worth flying.
