Ben you've chosen a difficult path for me to follow....
The price for the carb and reg is very close to what you used to pay for a Cline, carb and the mod fee. Three needle OS carbs have always been over $100. The Cline reg was at least $60. So if you do the math for the price of a whole new carb plus a machined aluminum reg, then $220 is pretty much what you'd expect to pay.
Why were OS carbs ever $100? I think this strikes at the heart of the problem. Carbs cost about 40 bucks to make (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bi...&I=SUPG0235&P=Z)(http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bi...p?&I=LXEGL8&P=Z). While these $40 carbs may not be refined enough for our heli use neither are the OS carbs. As you pointed out, your $100+ bought a carb that required and additional 120 in modification to run well. It seems as if the argument for the shockingly high price of the new OS regulator/carb is that you don't have to spend additional money to have your older dysfunctional over priced carb, modified.

Put another way...
This 1.20 with no muffler costs 140ish -> http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bi...?&I=LXDXM5&P=ML
This .91 with carb and muffler also costs 140ish -> http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bi...?&I=LXFV79&P=ML

Using these as data points to establish the cost to produce, package, and market a 15cc engine without muffler or carb at somewhere around $90 (140-50 for the carb and muffler), we have find a way to justify the typical OS heli engine price of $300 to $380 and then further justify the price of $450+ for the new and improved engine. There is about $210-290 unaccounted for in the historical pricing of the older OS heli engines and $360, or 400%(!), in the soon to be released engine.

I personally don't see any reason this new engine shouldn't be $250... That's $200 for the engine (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product...urce=google_ext) and $50 for the new carb and the "OS factor".

I think what really going on is OS is trying to take advantage of the deeper pockets of the heli community... The OS 55 aircraft engine is $160 and includes a muffler. The OS heli 55 is $300 with no muffler. Hmmm... Why not just buy the aircraft engine and use the well loved heli carb? Because the heli carb (OS 40L) is the ridiculous price of $140. Go figure. $160+$140 is strangely enough $300 or the price of the heli engine... If OS priced the 40L carb at a realistic price of around $60, folks would buy a 55AX and put the 40L on it for a total of $220. Even worse, they might buy a GMS .47 for $70 and put a $60 40L on it for total of $130.

can't we just say development cost and be done with it?

of course it would be nice if it were $250, but you and I aren't making the decisions are we?

OS has fixed a problem that YS users never had, and now YS are coming out with a more powerful and smoother engine, so that's where the game is at now.

It's going to be hard to justify the price with what YS is going to bring out.

What about R&D and the price they might have paid for this technology?

It seems like a lot of people are complaining about the cost of the RC Heli hobby. If it is not nitro motors than it is the 3G or this or that. I have paid for the OMI mod on my engine and it was worth it. And i will be happy to pay for the new carb when it comes out. You don't have to buy it, it is just and option. My OS HZ non pumped works great stock. Why dose everyone think they are getting ripped off? Should OS not be able to make a profit?

I am not trying to put anyone down, but these companies are in the business to make money and provide jobs for there employees just like the companies we all work for.

i'm not sure how ppl are calculating price per flight. Here is some estimates.

700E will require 2 5000MAH 6S to fly that is $279 (TP5000mah 6s 45c) x 2 = $558 x num packs: lets assume minimal packs pack be 2 so that $1116 for around 600 max (it your lucky) flights.

400 flights $2.79 per flight
600 flights $1.86 per flight
This not including what it cost to charge them back up.

Here are some cons:
only 2 flights with out recharging.
If you crash and you damage a batt you cost go up.
You have cycle your batts to max

Nitro:
I can get cool power for $22.75 30% cool power 6 flights per gallon. That is $3.79 per flight. Yes Electric is cheaper but there no upfront large cost with nitro. I can fly non stop also.

yes, but Turnigy packs are $60 each and not $279!!

And for my kind of flying I don't think I'll ever need it to handle 45C!!

I know electric is going to be cheaper, but I just still prefer quickness of fueling up and go, and I like nitro way too much.

LOL electric vs. nitro discussion beginning the engines forum

The irony

But your math is probably a little optimistic. DO you really think 300 cycles is realistic, on average, for a battery?

For 3D flight that is.

the new lipos are claiming over 300 cycles possible, I want someone to start a thread where they log how many cycles they go out of their lipos along with make and type.

I spent £70 on a 2S 5000mah reciever lipo and it claims over 300 cycles possible but I really don't know.

I'm not exactly sure what the difference between the two is. But I can tell you for sure that in order to use the crankcase pressure (as in the new 91hz-r) you must use the new carb+regulator/backplate w/pressure nipple/check valve. All of those things are required to make the system work.

I will try use the crankcase pressure with my HZPS carb and regulator. Now I am running without pump so I have backplate with pressure nipple, carb with regulator but I haven't check value. If I buy it, I will try this "set up" Adam Delingos
