Ok! So the Radical has been on the market for some time and for sure lots of pilots have been modifying. What is the best setup? I would like to get me one and would like a reasonable setup. Good servos, a motor, heading hold gyro and so one. I hear that lots of members are modifying the motor but I am not one to do so and would like to just buy and install.

It doesn't require anything fancy to fly good, I'm running cheap digatal servo's with speed at .13 6v and tourqe 90 6v, and a 401 gyro, stk motor with the century pipe.the 6.9 gear ratio seams to be the one people are likeing, it puts the motor in the power at about 1900 headspeed.it comes with 6.0 gearing witch is a bit high for a stk motor,Ok for sport flying but bogs to easy for 3D.I found a govener to be almost a must, the motor will overrev very easy with out one.i find the gv1 is working great on mine.
the Rotor tech 620 widechords are the blade of choice IMO
the LT version is all you need the HD version is only if you whant to run the 640 blades.for like AP work and such or scale applications with largerr blades.

Century heli rep. To much power is never enough.

Here's what I'm using, most of the electronics taken from the Raptor 50 Titan the Radikal replaces in my fleet...

JR 8717 cyclic servos
Futaba 9452 throttle servo
JR 770 3D Gyro with DS 8900 G tail servo
Spektrum 7100R RX with rev limiter backplate sensor triggered from ignition magnet
7.4 volt 5000 mAh Lipo for RX power
1500 mAh NiMH rx pack for ignition
6.9 optional gearing
Stock Zenoah G20 engine with MinAir air filter
Century tuned "torpedo" pipe
Century 50 aluminum rotor head, washout, and swash
Thunder Tiger 620 mm C/F main blades
KBDD neon orange paddles
KBDD neon yellow tail blades
Trex 600N alloy tail hub, blade grips, and slider
Trex 700N tail boom supports
Century fiberglass Radikal canopy

Do you need all of this? No, this is way more than what is required for it to be a good heli, as MAXHSHV states "It doesn't require anything fancy to fly good". This is my version of the "best setup" for the Radikal and sort of an attempt to get it into the same league as my Spectra G

Here are the 3 different options that Hanson has available:

Pro Heli Engine - 4 HP, pump bulb carburetor, lightened ported piston, balanced flywheel and blue printed cylinder

Pro Plus Heli Engine - same specs as above, plus a modified crankshaft for a very smooth running heli engine

3D-Max - Our most powerful heli engine. 4.8 HP, pump bulb carburetor, hi compression ported cylinder, lightened ported piston, trued and balanced crankshaft and flywheel for smooth running.

I went with the Pro Plus engine but have not had the chance to fly it.

Here is my set up on the Radikal
Radikal LT Carbon
Pro Plus Hanson Motor
Century Torpedo exhaust
JR 8917HV on cyclics
JR 8717 on throttle
Century Flybarless head
Mikado V Bar
Futaba BLS251 on the tail
Rotortech 620 Carbon Main Blades
Rotortech 95 Carbon Tail Blades

Should be one awesome bird when I get to fly it.

It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

You guys running these High speed Digital servos on your throttle are taking away from the performance of the engine if you are running a Gov the RPM Limter. The engine cannot respond to throttle changes that fast. These engines are much happier with servos running in the .20 neighborhood.

My config
Stock G10 Radikal with the LT head, Rotortech 640 mains.
Replaced the tail control to leading edge, epoxied hub to stay put, used Radix 95mm tails to lessen the load on the hub.
Hanson G20 Pro Plus balanced motor, very smooth, here is a link to a video that I shot of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36Pb1H8R01k

Electronics are:

JR 9 channel PCM receiver
Futaha 9252 servos on cyclic
Futaba 601 gyro with 9251 tail servo
A low cost standard servo for the throttle.
A gv-1 governor with custom made sensor mount.
A dual 5.4v output Jewel generator for RX and IGN.
Headlight superbright LED doubles as remote charge indicator.
A 1500mah Futaba rx pack (came with friend's radio).
Voltmagic battery monitor for RX pack.
A 1500mah NoBS ignition pack 2/3rd A cell size.
Voltwatch battery monitor for ignition pack.
Zimmmerman side mount front exhaust exit muffler (super quiet).
Two JR Deluxe switches for RX and IGN.
6.4 optional gear ratio.
Optional pull start option.
QWW rubber landing gear dampeners.

Total cost RTF, $2500. That's my ideal setup but you certainly don't need everything I did to make yours flyable -- its just how I do all my gassers, very similar in config to my Minair 1005 and Spectra-g.

$2500 RTF? I must be using "old math" or something. I cannot see where you have that much in a Radikal RTF.

Sparx:

Why don't you do the math for me with all the parts listed and tell us what you come up with. And just as an FYI, I didn't account for any shipping or tax costs of any of the items.

Also, that is my configuration. Noone says you have to configure it like me and you can certainly fly with cheaper stuff.

It might have cost you that much to put YOUR Radikal in the air, but it is certainly NOT the norm. But that is up to the end user. There is no reason you cannot get a Radikal in the air for MUCH less than that with excellent quality components.

I guess that all depends on your definition of excellent quality components. I just did a little pricing exercise on my base Radikal setup with what I consider to be good to excellent quality components, and this doesn't include quite a bit of what came after the baseline build. Had I bought everything as it sits now new, I'd be into it for considerably more than $2500...

Radikal G10 LT kit with engine and Century pipe $935
Three 8717 servos $350 from LHS
One Futaba 9452 servo $80 from LHS
One Spektrum AR 7100R RX - $220
One JR 770 3D gyro $170
One JR DS 8900 tail servo $140
One 5000 mAh RX Lipo $65
Thunder Tiger 620 mm C/F blades $75
One MinAir air filter $35
One 1500 mAh NiMH pack for ignition plus incidentals such as locktite, servo wire wrap, tie wraps, etc, call it $30 for a round number

That all adds up to $2100, yes, less than $2500, but not by a huge amount. Not to say I actually spent that much, 90 % of the electronics I used came out of a Raptor 50 titan I retired when I bought the Radikal, but if I didn't have any of it, that's what it would have cost. Shop around on the internet, grab some used odds and ends, MAYBE shave another $300 off for this setup if you're lucky.

Bottom line, it adds up quicker than you like to think about, so most of us don't...

XCell Spectra G
Radikal G20

I mentioned in another post that my radical cost half as much as my Spectra. Here's how:

3 Align DS 610 Servos (new) $150.00
1 Futaba 611 gyro/servo combo (used) $150.00
1 Zenoah 20cc (new) $309.00
1 Radical G10 kit (new) $450.00
1 GV-1 Gov with sensor (used) $50.00
2 JR Heavy Duty Switches (new) $30.00
2 2700mah 4.8 v NIMH Batts (new) $50.00
1 JR 921 reciever (new) $135.00
15 ft protective wire braid $5.00
1 SAB 620 mm main blades (new) $80.00
1 SAB 95 mm tail blades (new) $27.00
1 Century Torpedo Pipe (new) $110.00
1 Fut 9252 throttle servo (used) $40.00
1 Hook and loop, locktite, CA,
heat shrink, etc. $40.00
1 Skid stops $12.00

Prices includes shipping and taxes (some items). I would purchase 100 + for free shipping and used items were more pre-owned than actually used. I did not include the engine modification price.

Grand Total of $ 1638.00

I could easily knock $400-450 off what you listed (rccarguy) there and I can guarantee that you would no notice the difference in flight. But that is the beauty of this hobby, you can spend as much as you want as long as it makes you happy and you enjoy it.

I think mine costs less with Woody's prices
1 Futaba 611 gyro/servo combo (used) $150.00 (New cost Tower $400)
1 Zenoah 20cc (new) $309.00 (New cost Horizon Hobby is $340)
1 Radical G10 kit (new) $450.00 (At Century its $500)
1 GV-1 Gov with sensor (used) $50.00 (New cost at Tower $165)
1 SAB 620 mm main blades (new) $80.00 (Century's 620's is $110)
1 Century Torpedo Pipe (new) $110.00 (Again, $135 here)
1 Fut 9252 throttle servo (used) $40.00 (New its $85 at Tower)

If these items were all new valued at the well known prices, that would bring Woody's machine to $2184...

Anyway, yes sure you can get used stuff for less, the point was with new stuff its going to be at least around 2K anyways.

Curious thing though Woody, where do you get the Radikal kit for $450 and the Century pipe for $110? Did you find another dealer selling less than Century?

Kit/engine/Pipe = $935
3x Hyperion 20FMD (cyclic) = $108
Basic Throttle Servo = $20
Throttle Jockey Gov/Limiter = $90
Tail Gyro (Mini G, Futaba 520, JR 370) = ~$150
Tail Servo ( JR, Futaba ) = ~$130
Mavrrik G5 Widecords Blades = $67 (2Q/Blemished Blades)
Receiver (futaba or JR) = ~$100
Power System (batterys/reg/switches) = ~$100
Misc (building supplies) = ~$50

Total: $1750

This is just a starting point. That config above will outfly 90% of the people in these forums.

There are ways to even cut the costs more on that. For instance get the Futaba 401/9254 combo from Tower. Right now it is $230 and then there is a $25 off coupon. So you would get it for $205. That will save you
$75 right there. And that combo will be fine for a lot of people as well.

Then you in the case of the RX. For the JR/Spektrum guys. I figured an AR7000 and a RevMax for a total of $190. There are a number of places where you can get $20-25 off a $200-$250 purchase. So you can get an AR7100R for just about the same price.

There are a number of shops out there that do coupon codes. So if you shopped smart, you could easily knock $100-$200 off the cost of your heli.

Seems to me that he bought his Kit and Pipe from a shop that was having a 10% off sale. Not uncommon these days.

We all have our ways of getting things cheaper! Some dont care! Some of us may disclose and others may not for different reasons. I purchased the majority of items on ebay, Ron Lund and RR. If you are going to shop for everything in one day, I can see you spending that much money. I fell into that trap with my spectra and spent way too much. I could have had another heli by shopping smart with my spectra.

As for the used stuff, its a gamble.... I have not had any problems yet with members here. I check feedback and then make the offer or purchase. All my used stuff was tested on my Raptor 30 (no longer have) for about 20 flights.

Look at my list, its all top quality and worth every bit. Take the Align DS 610's, compare them to the JR 8717's. The difference is a little less torque and a 1/10 sec of speed and 70 bucks! I think they are lighter too. But as chopper crazy says "as long as we are having fun, who cares"

Am i missing something here?

Why is it such a big deal on what it cost to put in the air??

People have their own favourite brands and items.

OR IS THIS A PISSING CONTEST???????????

If it ain't broke then break it.
