Hi,

I need to replace bearings on my 91SR and found it weird that the front bearing is sealed on both sides.

Other manufacturers keep one side open and rely on the lubrication in the fuel. There is a groove that could be for lubrication to the bearing.

Is this correct that both sides of the front bearing are sealed?

Yea, I've seen that on two YS-91 motors.. However I've never had the front bearing fail, its always the rear bearing that goes.

It's OK to leave it that way. The oil from the oil groove will easily work its way around the shield to lube the bearing long after the grease inside has flushed away.

OS supplies their front bearings with one shield off if you'd care to have one that way.

There is no reason to remove a SHIELD from the front bearing. These are not SEALS and have a small gap between the lip of the shield and the inner race. Any oil that gets past the crank and case will easily get through this larger gap.

SEALED bearings should have both seals left in place. The main reason a manufacturer would use a sealed bearing is to prevent loss of crankcase pressure, such as with the YS and Saito four strokes.

All of the YS-91SR front bearings I've seen have been metal shielded bearings. None were "sealed" bearings..

Same here all the front bearings on my mchines are shielded on both sides.

I am sure HGH meant shielded since sealed would mean a rubber shield, that won't be able to withstand the temperature.

heinz,

Seals will easily handle the heat near a front bearing. That is one of the coolest places on the engine.

correct heinz, any bearings i instal in my engines use the rubber seal type and none have burnt yet. If the seal burns on your front bearing, then you are in big big trouble!

If it doesnt move and its meant too... use WD 40. If it moves and its not meant too...use duct tape!
