guys, I'm not writing this for sympathy !! !! I just want to share my experience !!

I have been sick for 6 weeks with Bronchitis, and as I now know Asthma can go along with Bronchitis,, well I went to the Emergency Room 8 times in the last 6 weeks for breathing treatments cause I couldn't breath well, this breathing treatments is a medicine that fogs-up in a mist and you just breath it in,, so every time I went to the ER the days between each visit lowered, fist it was like 6 days between visits, then 5 days between visits, then 4 then 3 days between visits, then I went Saturday then Sunday,, most of those times I went to the ER was very early in the morning, 2 or 3 in the morning,,

well on Sunday I went to the ER at about 5AM and had another breathing treatment for the 8th time then when I was better the Doctor said, quote ""you got Asthma and it's brought-on by the Cat, you can go home now"",, well I went out the door and got in my Van and started to drive off and I felt I couldn't breath again so I parked the Van and went back in the Hospital, well by the time I got in the ER I couldn't breath at all, I was just taking in very tinny gulps of air, then as I set down, the Dr is listening to my lungs, then very slowly I started breathing better,, and better,, and better,,
what happen is because of the Asthma I could breath in but I could NOT breath out so my lungs filled up with air, then after about 2 minutes my Diaphragm forced the air out of my lungs and I could breath again shooo, the Dr said I was lucky cause people have died because of that before,,

was I scared ??? funny thing I wasn't scared !! I don't know why but I wasn't,,

SOooo Sunday they put me in the Hospital and I got-out on Tuesday, I'm much much better now shooooo, so now I got to see an Asthma Doctor so I can stay on top of this,, but the thing is it's a winter thing, it happened last winter too but not as bad and it doesn't bother me in the Summer,,, so next winter if I get Bronchitis again I got to be careful and stay on top of it,, any-hoo in the last 6 weeks I have been on like 10 different drugs (including) 5 different Steroids (1 Steroid I was on twice), 4 different Inhales, 2 different Steroid Nose Drops, and a Antihistamine,,

BTY for you that don't know Steroids really speed you up !!!! Buzz Buzz Buzz, man I was all buzzed up on them, it was Ok for a couple days but after 3, then 4 days you just want the buzz to stop but this buzzing doesn't stop, then you take the last pill on the 5th or 6th day and you start to come down, actually I took my last pill today so I'm buzzing as I type this, so tomorrow I hope I won't feel it, I have had enough of it !!

you can see my first post here when I was on the Steroids the first time,,

An Asthma attack can be caused by a variety of things not all allergen or animal based. The biggest thing is to be prepared with meds to fight it because if you can't breathe, ooops I left my inhaler in the car won't do.
Some of the meds used to combat it are: Albuterol (bronchodialator) , Atrovent (brochodialtor but works a different way), Steroids (mainly used to strengthen the walls of the Aveoli so that they stay open) etc.
Do yourself a favor and go see a specialist who can narrow down the actual cause of your issues so that you can fight it better........Ron

I had asthma real bad when I was younger. As I got into college and now, it has subsided quite a bit but I used to take every single drug known to man. Prednisone (for bad bouts of it), Albuterol rescue inhaler, Theoyphelline (which I don't think they use anymore), albuterol in a nebulizer (machine treatments) and every once in awhile, an adrenaline shot. I used to go the emergency room at least twice a year as well when it was real bad. My asthma was usually triggered by some other condition (cold, flu, sinus infection, ear infection, etc).

Now, I just use a rescue inhaler if I should ever need it. I've pretty much grown out of it. I just hope my kids don't get it as I know how miserable it is to struggle for every breath and all you can focus on is breathing.

One thing my Dr. was always adamant about, was NO CATS!. Their dander is horrible for people with allergies and asthma.

Theophellin is NOT used any more.
They favor Prednisone.
They also favor Singulair or one of the other inhaled steroids over the albuterol inhaler.

Try double pneumonia with an asthma attack sometime!

I used to suffer chronic asthma as a youngster (cats, horses, rhodedendron, etc etc) but since taking up smoking in my teens, I have never since had an attack. Strange init. Now, some 30 years later I've at last given up smoking; well thats if you don't include e-cigarettes. NB, immune systems can develop allowing a high degree of resiliance; our lives can be too clean and a bit of exposure to toxins is a good thing.

thanks for the replies !!

I am going to see a Specialist on Tuesday,, I don't know if it's the cat (s), I'm home now and I'm OK, even if it is the cat (s) I pretty sure it was the Bronchitis that started the whole thing and then maybe the cat (s) topped it off, see I got sick with Bronchitis first..

People can be fine for years in the presence of what for various strange reasons later becomes a serious irritant. Oddly enough it works both ways. For 40 years a close relative couldn't be around cats at all, now he's fine.

Be sure your Specialist is well-qualified to solve your particular puzzle without a lot of long, drawn-out experimentation.

Don't be surprised if they want to run a full battery of allergy tests on you. It'll probably be one of the first things. For sure they will have you start monitoring your lung capacity with a peak flow meter.

Hey the Wasp, I know your pain! I have suffer the same.

Like a year ago, my doctor put me on a treatment of Seretide Diskus 50/250mg inhaler and this thing has change my live.

I dont know if you can find this medicine in US with this name but his generic is: Salmeterol and fluticasone propionate (50/250mg) administered via combination Diskus inhaler.

I think they sell it in US under the name: Advair Diskus

I recomend you to make a web search about this medicine and also ask your doctor about it.

Good luck,

Isaac

the Wasp, man I feel for you! I had bad allergies until I was in may 40's, that was bad enough. Not being able to breath, that bites!
Any chance you could do the snow bird thing and go South for the winter? Hay you could fly all year then.

djrformcar,, I know people that do that and I would like to but I can't afford to,
my wife and I are talking about leaving Vt after she retires because we don't enjoy the cold any more but I can tell you I would be lost if I left Vt for good, it would be really nice if we could leave for the winters and live here in the summers but I just don't see us affording it..

why did you use the ER as your own personal doctor?

Why didn't you go see a regular doctor after your first ER visit?
