comcast just upgraded my security package from macAfee to Norton. from what i understand it is a good thing. doesn't cost me a dime unless after a year they inform me i have to pay for it. Norton does not have a deep hardrive scrubber(if that's what you call it). does anyone use a scrubber and what's a good one, i don't want any programs destroyed either. i am using vista.

A couple years ago I got a virus that norton knew nothing about and could not help me. I had to spend 6 hours hunting down these damn chaining programs and going through the registry to try to stop them and remove the sources. Then I had to send norton the instructions on how to remove the virus for an update. I never had good luck with norton.

I use BitDefender, $25 for 3 years at hermanstreet, online download.

As for the scrubber, are you talking about a program to completely destroy the data on a hard drive to prevent it from ever being restored? You hiding child porn on your computer?

Sorry, here you go:

http://www.fileshredder.org/ Good free one.

http://eraser.heidi.ie/ This one is supposed to be "DOD quality".

These are the free ones that were recommended on some security forums. I don't know if they are FBI forensics lab proof though...

norton will do a fine job of destroying any harddrive it's installed on.

It'll also do one heck of a job slowing down your computer at the worst possible time.

10 lb sledgehammer does a pretty good job of making it unreadable

I've got a drawer full of HD's from old PC's just collecting dust, one of these days I'll have to destroy them, crap gets old and outdated I just yank the drives and get rid of everything else.

everyone is a comedian.............

"I just picked up a macbook, taken to compusa for repair. They had sent it to apple, apple repaired it and sent it back to compusa.

It is the same computer I dropped off at compusa, BUT IT HAS A DIFFERENT HARD DRIVE. THE DATA BELONGS TO SOMEONE ELSE!!! MY DATA/APPLICATIONS ARE NO WHERE TO BE SEEN!"

i heard about these stories.

did you sign a release stating that your data was subject to deletion or something to that effct?

When I worked at Circuit City in college, we used to make all the computer repairs sign a release. Inevitably, the technicians would erase the HD as the first step instead of fixing the problem.
