Any of my heli engines i break them in in the heli and the same with the plank engines, i break them in in the plane. If i was haveing severe running problems, then i would put them in a test stand with a prop so i can work round them. Its good to break a engine in where its going to be running for the rest of its days.

If it doesnt move and its meant too... use WD 40. If it moves and its not meant too...use duct tape!

In the heli, running slightly rich. Not slobbering rich, not hot, and dont load the engine with aerobatics for a couple of flights then lightly load it, after 5 or 6 tanks lean it in a bit and go for it.

I would say that the term "breaking in" is quite unfortunate, it suggest like if the motor should go through some dramatic change or something... In some threads I saw folks asking if it's normal that the metal did not change color and what not..

I would just call it "running in" as it is only supposed to remove any surface flaws from machining and make the parts set-in with each other, at least in the ringed motors mostly used in helicopters. With ABC ringless motors it also means that the final fit between the piston and the liner, under load and temperature, needs to be worked-out by running the motor, so for these engines it's a bit more critical how it's done.

For ringed engines a run with limited load, slightly rich and for shorter periods - should be just fine. So a bit of hovering will do OK, often it's the same time of checking the curves, trims and the likes.

Just my 5c...

engine breakin
If you have a brand new engine then you should have brand new directions.Just read and follow. If you don't then you will probably be sorry down the road. It will start losing compression earlier than the norm and you also might have starting problems early in the game. It is the first 8-12 engine runs that are the most critical.Once again read the break-in procedure and you should have no problems later.
