....what can I do?

We had these people buy the house across the street from us recently. He has a Cutlas with glass packs, mabe only one, I think one side is open. Normaly the noise would not bother me. I try to be tolerant, especially since I have a Ninja and a custom Honda chopper with open exhaust.

The problem I do have is that when he starts the car he has to rev it up constantly. It's loud enough it rattles my windows and walls, and even the neighbor behind me hears him. And to make matters worse he does this at ANY time of the day or night.

Anybody have any ideas that I could do nicely to possibly get him to stop?

Before you answer "talk to him nicely" it can't be done. Me and my neighbors have tried to be friendly to them. We say hi to them if they are outside, ect..........but they will not even look at us.

There are noise restrictions in my towns here where I am at it is 10pm to 6a he does it betwen that time call the cops during theay your kinda screwed unless you can get the other neighbors to call in when he is doing it also. They will then have to do something. If thadont work well then stoop to his level and distur him.but just tell your good neighbors in advance what your going to do. After a while I amure he will say something then tell him when you stop doing it I will stop maybe he make stop.

Probably the only thing YOU have not done,is to confront this neighbor face to face.Do that and see what happens,at least it will give you a starting point.

make a point to go over next time you see him out or something and tell him the reason he has to torque on it first thing is because he has too little backpressure.tell him to put on a set of good mufflers and see if that works.make out like your trying to get HELP him make his car perform better, get better gas mileage etc..tell him from what you can hear, somethings amiss.
that would at least make him think about it and hopefully make some changes.

Wow, this is a tough one. Can't go to the cops, the neighbor will only report you too for having loud motorcycles. BTW, nice scoot in your gallery. Haven't seen that kind of bike since the 70's.

Here's an idea. Do any of his bedrooms face your house? You should have an urgent need to install high output security lights...Aimed directly at his house. I guarentee he'll want to chat then!

I don't have any further suggestions for you than what was already given, but it's really inconsiderate to be loud in the neighborhoods. I have a decently loud car and I keep it near idle until I get on the main roads.

water does!

I agree with Brokenlink, man up and go talk to him one on one. If it gets ugly, keep your cool and just say thanks for your time. Maybe he'll rethink the matter and be more respectful.

On the other hand, he most likely will not. I had a neighbor like this once when I was renting a duplex. He had outdoor speakers that he would blast to all hours of the night. I called the PoPo many times on this jackass, but it would keep occuring. At the time I had 2 children under the age of 4. So, you can imagine. The jackass was an alcholic who would play his radio blasting then pass out in his house drunk leaving the tunes blaring.

One night I hopped the fence with the stealth and agility of a ninja. Took his sterio and speakers and dropped them into his pool. I never heard that radio again.

F-U neighbor!

Has anyone walked over and actually welcomed them to the neighborhood? If not, that should be done. If you are into cars or are a gearhead, you can talk shop. Stay on his good side as you direct the conversation to the fact that glasspacks are ****, don't make the car any faster and pretty much are an annoyance to everyone. Just like those loud pipes on motorcycles. Loud pipes saves lives my ass. Most cars are so well soundproofed any more you don't hear them until the bike is right there. People use them because they think it is kewl. I am fine with that, just don't fool yourself into thinking it adds to safety.

You might be screwed though. I have a friend who lives in town. Her neighbor builds mud bogger trucks. They are open exhaust and he is out at all hours mindlessly revving them. I have worked on cars for my entire adult life, and have never had a need to rev anything. If you are tuning, you need to tune for the load the engine sees under the circumstances it is being used. It would be like taking our helicopter engines, bolting them to a table, and running them with a prop to dial in the needles. (Yeah yeah, plankers do that, but you don't do it to a heli engine. Maybe you could if you could use something to simulate the load). I digress...

Back to my friend, she has talked to them, called the cops, tried being nice, tried being not so nice, nothing worked. Yet another reason I live out of town...

Check you city and state laws.

Vehicles are designed with mufflers to reduce sound.
many states have laws to enforce the vehicle laws for modification ( racing) and noise.
Also if the modifications are extensive, he may have affected or altered the anti-pollution part of the vehicle. which prohibited in many states and countries. Resulting in the vehicle, not to obtain new registration, or having his registration removed, as it does not meet their minimum requirements.

I had a similar problem long time ago, I called the police when this guy was reeving up his car, I opened the window, when I called, and informed the police, I can't hear you it's too loud, Finally after a few minutes the guy drove off, and informed the police, OK now I can hear, and informed them I wanted to report a loud vehicle.
They found the car without a muffler and catalytic converter
Police took his plates, until it met code.

Or maybe a couple in there might do the trick. I just read that just one would probably get ejected. Try a couple and see what happens.

Some call this poetic justice while others, a perfect match.

Seems like a wash to me.

And yes...nice bike.

Thanks Tracerbob, it's been a lot of fun. I might have to sell it though due to back problems.

There are some good suggestions there. As for being friendly and talking to them that will not work. Several of us has tried. Him and his wife will not even look at us when we say something to them.

He's not tuning it or anything like that either. And there is no problem with it idleing either. I've seen the mother get in, start it up and walk away while it runs fine. My neighbors daughter knows them somehow and they are just flat out idiots and don't have any respect for the rest of us. He got stuck in the snow a few weeks ago and just sat there and reved it at full throttle smoking his tires. Than make his wife dig it out while he watched.

I've thought about the potato thing but not sure I like the idea of getting caught. Especially since the police substation is only two blocks away. (CRAP! he just started it up right now)

As far as the cops, they will not do anything until midnight. It's coming to calling them though.

I can understand that, but the chopper has not run in 5 years and the ninja has been parked for over a year. I was always considerate when I started them up though. I would never rev them up in the middle of the night when I knew people were sleeping.

hope you got video?

just go over there like brokenlink or I suggested and just ask in a nice way....then if that fails we can go with the less civil plan B.

I want to know who in the world puts glasspacks on a Olds Cutlass!!!!! That first off is hilarious! I mean I live in Arkansas and I didn't think all our rednecks had migrated that far north yet.

I agree with what has been said. If you never try civility then you can't say it won't work. It is like people who gripe, but never vote. Not much a of leg to stand on you know...

If that fails then.... give the Police a call one night and see if he likes a officer coming to his house.

Go hire a pickup truck and in the dead of night, by stealth, tow it to the nearest quarry and drop a stick of dynamite in the tank.
But seriously, I expect his antisocial activities need reporting to the police. Good luck.
