I just want to start off my saying that I absolutely love the Protos. It is a top notch machine. In fact, I am on number 2.

I am using the following equipment on a carbon airframe:
Kora Motor
Jazz 80
AR7000
9650's on cyclic
BLS251 on tail
Spartan DS760
Running exclusively Hyperion G3's

This thing flys pretty dang good. On about the 20th or so flight as I was hovering, breaking in a new pack, all of the sudden the heli just rolled over straight into the ground. I immediately reacted by giving the heli opposite cyclic and when I knew that it was going in I also applied throttle hold. It didn't seem like either input was recognized by the heli.

Not sure what went wrong. It wasn't a lockout as the heli would have gone into failsafe mode and the power would have been cut. This also blows the theory of a static issue. The battery was ejected in the crash so I was unable to verify if the light on the rx was blinking.

I did send the rx into Horizon for repairs and it came back clean.

Anyway, just a bit frustrated that a small crash like this can tally up to $300. I didn't even have the canopy on at the time. I could crash a .90 for that price!

Does anyone have any ideas? I just don't want to piece it back together just to have the same thing happen again.

Also, does anyone know if I can get the bottom bearing block separately other than buying the whole plastic frame set (for the carbon frames, part number MSH51095?

that IS what static does.
Did it to mine exactly the same symptoms, except mine went in with elevator.
Throttle hold only cut the motor once the blades hit the ground, and I guess earther out (no pun intended)
Static does not leave failsafe working.
The whole RX fritz's out, leaving you nothing.

Yeah, sounds like the same for the protos I used to have. Flew awesome and then just dropped out of the sky on its side into the ground. Everything worked fine when I got it (electronic wise). Crash cost was cheap. How did it add up to $300.00? is that including a battery? Did you blow out the gears on your 9650s?

I actually did toast a battery (only one flight on it) but that was not included in the cost.

Yes, all 3 9650's stripped.

The only surviving parts on the heli were the carbon frames and the landing gear.

Wow, that's bad. Sorry to hear that. I too would be afraid to fly it not knowing if what caused it still exists. Did you have that new Static boom support installed? I am setting up my protos now and will install that.

When mine went in, I decided that I was sick of this bs, so got rid of all Spektrum and JR gear, and went Futaba.
Zero issues since.
Futaba has no issues with static hits like Spektrum/JR do.
And yes Ive heard all the discussion about this before.
So please, no JR fanboys arguing over this lol.
Since I went Futaba, zero issues, just reliable.

fwiw,,

I have firsthand experience with both systems...

Most static hits affect the esc....this then affects the rx...Neither system is inherently immune...Only heli I've lost to a lockout in the last four or so years was on FASST...

Caveat Emptor...

Futaba 10CHG, awesome radio, LOADS of features.

Compare the amount of issues with Futaba FASST (genuinely, not someone just running dodgy RX packs or flying to long), and amount of issues with Spektrum....
I still stand by the fact that Futaba has very little if any static induced issues.

Static hits the RX not the esc.
If it was the esc, then why does everyone ground their static wires to it?
Also why do peoples E motors keep going full throttle if its hits the esc.
And why have I not had a single issue with static since then, whilst on the RX and TX has changed
IMO it does not hit the esc.

Not flaming you by any means, just my opinion is all.

I used to run Spektrum, but awhile back I switched over to Futaba. I never have used any static mods on any helis while using the Futaba system and have had no problems. I actually don't see any guys at my field running Futaba with static mods. Now of the problems I have seen with lockouts and static hits were all Spektrum guys at my field. In fact, most of them ended up crashing because of it. I trust Futaba and will never go back to Spektrum!

When u don't feel like soaring through the air with a plane, beat it into submission w/ a heli!

Exactly what happened to me. Have you got the conductive tail boom case? If not get it, belts and braces run a wire to the motor mount. Also someone on RunRyder recommended to me to get the metal pulley wheels.

This happened twice to me. Ever since I did the above I have had no problems. (I am using Spectrum btw)

Hope you get flying soon.

I bought the metal tail pulleys as they help with the static.
They did make a difference no doubt.
Problem was still there, though not as bad or often.

fwiw...

Recommend lubing the belt with silicone on ANY belt driven tail..Been doing this for years, coincidentally haven't had any "static" related issues...As far as static affecting the rx , the rf from a discharge is AM....Digital Rx's can't typically "Hear"it...
The Spektrum issues have all revolved around a low voltage condition leading to a brown out..ESC...Recent firmware updates have reduced the reconnect time from a brownout to milliseconds.
Hit either system hard enough...it will fail.
Coincidentally, the heli I mentioned earlier was not lubed. (not my heli)
Personally, I don't believe the static mods do much if anything to alleviate such issues...The boom blockbolts to plastic or Carbon fiber, neither of which is a conductor. (I know, but you have to specially prepare the carbon fiber)
Anyone remember the issues with the Vigor?

John.

So does this mean I can't listen to the radio while flying my heli?

Jeff

Sorry I couldn't resist.

To hover is divine, the alternative is rather PLANE.

Only if you're flying a Protos, apparently...

You can do a $2 static mod or pay more money for the Futaba Tx/rx and still not have a fool proof system (none are). Your choice

thanks for the link, just checked it out and looks impressive. I like the back lit screen and the SD memory. Would be nice if you can play mp3 music on it while flying that would defiantly sell me
