Hi there,

Is there anybody who could help me out with servo selection for the old gy401, I would like to know if it would be possible to use a Hitec 6975 or 7966 with the gy401 in ds mode. Or do you have to stick to the futaba brands.
I have the chance of using a 401 on my next heli and I have at my disposal the choice of the two servo's listed above, but if there are any better servo's that would work with the gyro I am open to suggestions. I have trawled through a few searches but I can't find too much info on the 2 servo's listed above and the gyro seems to have fallen from favour, I don't fly 3D as such so the gyro seems a good option, Any help would be good.

Good luck

I think you can use almost any servo with 401 but it will perform better with digital and with at least .08 or faster.

I just looked the spec for 7966 and I think it should but keep in mind it also depends on what machine are you going to this on.

I think that 401 works only with 1520uSec digital servos. So better go with them.

It will run just about any servo (excluding the bls251, 9251 and 9256)

DS mode is another matter. Theres nothing special about Futaba digital servos other than that they can handle the 270hz frame rate that the 401 puts out in DS mode. Some other digital servos can handle that just fine, some will burn up. You need to know the input frame rate that the servo can deal with before you hook it up and fly it in DS mode.

I have a Hitec HS6965 on the tail of my Trex-700. This is the older version of the 7966. It works fantastic, significantly better than I expected. I'm using a Futaba 520 to run it.

You should have no problems running a 7966 in DS mode with your 401. Also I run mine with straight LiFe voltage (over 7V fully charged) no problems after 5 gallons. Nice bonus with this setup, no regulator or stepdown needed.

Since you are not flying "3D" I wouldn't have any problems putting the 6975 on there either if you have it. I'd bet it'll hold very well. Run them both in DS mode, they are fine with the 270 frame rate. If you are buying new get the G2 series (7xxx), the 6xxx series are the older versions.

The futaba 9254 is made for the 401 and it talk to it the best.

Thanks for the replies, The heli it is going in is Logo 500 3d,

So the hitecs will be fine might just give it a go then.

I have shy'ed away from the futaba 9254 as the fit in the mikado frames is not quite as good as the hitec fit.

Good luck

as mentioned, be certain if its not a digital servo to make sure you dont have the switch in ds mode on the gyro itself... you'll burn up the servo in nothin flat...

I would say - make sure it's a servo capable of digital servo mode ( high frame rate ). The Futaba 9257 can be had for a very good price. BLS257 is better but costs more. I have a relatively good experiences with Hitec 5084 but I used it only for a scale 450 electric heli.
I would not use a servo that can not be used in DS mode, it's just an added trouble with getting a decent hold without wagging..
