I recently was reading in a thread that someone possibly got scammed. One of the comments was "why doesn't everyone ship COD?".
Well I for one don't know how, but it sounds like a win win for seller and buyer. Can anyone explain how this works and are there any drawbacks to this way of dealing?

If you own a business lets say u sell wine. When ur supplier delivers u wine u have to pay on delivery with cash to the driver who works for company that sells u the wine. He can see that u paid rite there and then. In our case i dont think the ups man is going to carrie the cash back to who sold u the heli. thats all i know dave

Your best bet for that Info. is USPS. look for Collect on Delivery(COD).

USPS
You can do that but you have to pay postage upfront but you can also add that to the total that USPS collects for you & then they send you the money via check once the person you shipped it to pays them.
The only problem is if the person doesn't pickup the COD or refuses it you are out the postage but you will get your stuff back.

If you have to bend over more than once to pickup your Heli it was a bad landing

I checked it out and looks like alot of trouble waiting on check or money order. Then check might be bad or the money order not get back to me. Paypal seems worth the 3% for coverage.

The check comes from the Post office not the person so the check will be good. I believe the post office only accepts cash from the person accepting the COD. It does work I have done it long time ago

I honestly think there will still be problems.

Say buyer gets package and it either isn't what he asked for or is damaged. Can he open the box to see?

Say the buyer isn't home when the package arrives. What then? The seller paid for shipping and it isn't there. Does it get sent back to the seller? At whose expense? How can that be enforced on a buyer who simply forgot to be there?

No the buy can not open package until he pays for it and yes someone could mis-represent product but that is mail fraud at that point.

If the buyer isn't home the post office leaves a notice that they have a COD package and it can be picked up at the post office.
The post office sends package back to shipper if is isn't claimed in a certain amount of time and I can't remember what that is, I want to say 10 days but not sure anymore. You would have to check with PO on that. If it is refused or the person fails to claim it if I remember there is no charge for Return, but I can't be positive. The post office can answer all your questions for sure before you use the service. You would want to have an agreement with the person you are sending to first.

I was the one that posted the COD stuff .....and Ginnz, when I was married, that was 99% of the reason that when I ordered from MA, I had it sent COD and I paid the driver CASH. I got a receipt, MA got their money in short order (a day or two) and the wifey was none the wiser (thank god - she had no idea how much I was spending).
Yes, the seller has to wait a day or two, but there is no chance that the credit card gets rejected, PayPal screws up the transfer, etc.
PLUS you're not hanging your credit card etc. out on the internet for everybody to finger fXXXk you. Just don't get it. It's the easiest way to get things done. Both parties are covered.

I live in the sticks so I am never home when the mail person comes.
It seems like it would be a hassle to have to go to the town that is the other direction than I usually go and try to do it during postal hours, since I am usually working.
I guess it is more of a hassle to wait on someone to send your stuff while they already have your money. AT least COD you are for sure getting your product before you shell out your hard earned money.
It is an Idea and I might give it a try the next time I purchase something.

If someone wants to scam you then you will get scammed, even using COD. If I sell you something for $100 + $20 shipping I am required to Pay UPS for instance, the $20 shipping charge up front with a small fee for them having to collect the money (usually $5 or so). I the seller am out $25 so far to the buyers nothing. Good for buyer right? UPS delivers parcel to buyer and collects the total cash owed for the agreed transaction,$120. Buyer gets inside and there is either the shiney parts he was told he was buying or a lump of coal.

BTW, if what I described to you was going to weigh roughly 4 lbs then I the scammer will make sure your package weighed 4lbs when shipped. It's a he said this I said that dispute from then on out. Pretty much the same as all mail or internet transactions.

all true. But what it DOES protect you from is the guy that gets your money and farts around for a week or two before he feels like shipping you your stuff.
If somebody wants to scam you over a small amount of money, well then there's really not a whole lot you can do. I was friends with my UPS driver and he always let me open the box before he left.
Oh, and to the guy that said it was a hassle to go in the other direction to pick up your parcel.....do what I used to do, have it shipped to your work. I did this for other reasons....

Does it make it mail fraud if someone does that?
Maybe PP is the way to go and just pay the fee sorta like paying insurance. At least then they put a hold on the offending account until the dispute is settled.

Isn't shipping and insurance always paid upfront by the seller until they get a confirmation that the seller has their stuff and likes it?
I don't usually deposit the money from my paypal until the entire transaction is finished. So everytime we take the risk of paying all that until the buyer is satisfied. It sounds like both ways (paypal and COD) have their pros and cons. I do like the point of not putting your c/c number out there. Except alot of us use c/c's to pay for our addiction. I didn't see on the USPS website that you could pay with one. Has anyone done this and/or is there a way around it?

Yes you are right, I just wish people would be honest so you could trust everyone and we wouldn't have these kind of issues.
I remember as a kid we never locked our house not even when we went on vacation for two weeks. Not sure what has changed but you can't do that now heck these days you wouldn't even think of going to the store for 20 min. and leave the house unlocked.

Hi,
I have had two items delivered to me in the last 30 days that were not as described.
In one , E bay refunded my money, the other one from R/R ,I have no recourse, but try and fix the item.
From now on it,s COD or nothing.

believe nobody.

I've done COD before, when the guy handed me the package I just opened it to make sure the stuff was there, he never said anything to me. Stuff was there and I paid him. So you likely can open the package.

Aside from that I've had people with no feedback list it on ebay for buy it now and let me know right when it was posted, I'd pay an additional $5-10 for the added cost. If it's on ebay and it's not as described ebay will refund the cash. I just got a refund on 4 thunderpower batteries that were described as tested and working with no refunds. Ebay refunded the cash no problem after I sent them the tracking number to prove return delivery..
