Here is a test for you
STOMACH ACID ASSESSMENT

For this test you will need some baking soda. The purpose of this test is to give us a rough indication as to whether your stomach is producing adequate amounts of hydrochloric acid. The most scientific test for assessment of hydrochloric acid levels is the Heidelberg test, although it is not foolproof. Gastrocaps can also be used to measure hydrochloric acid levels with good accuracy. Both these methods are somewhat cumbersome however, and involve a visit to a doctor for you to swallow a special capsule, which is used to measure acid levels.

Hydrochloric acid is important for digestion and absorption of many nutrients. When hydrochloric acid is lacking (a condition termed hypochlorhydria), malnutrition results. At the same time, one can develop multiple food sensitivities as abnormally large, inadequately digested food particles are absorbed, triggering an immune response. Also, because hydrochloric acid kills many bacteria, yeasts, and parasites, its insufficiency is associated with greater incidence of dysbiosis (gastrointestinal infection). Hypochlorhydria is linked to not only gastrointestinal symptoms (including belching, gas, indigestion, poor appetite, prolonged fullness after meals, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea), but also to autoimmune diseases and degenerative diseases of all kinds. It is a major contributor to chronic unwellness that is under-appreciated. Although hypochlohydria can occur at any age, older individuals are especially effected. Some estimates suggest half of individuals over age 65 have inadequate stomach acid.

To perform this test: mix one quarter teaspoon of baking soda in eight ounces of cold water, first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything except water. Drink the baking soda solution. Time how long it takes to belch. Time up to five minutes. If you have not belched within five minutes stop timing anyway.

If your stomach is producing adequate amounts of hydrochloric acid you should probably belch within two to three minutes. Early and repeated belching may be due to excessive stomach acid. Belching results from the acid and baking soda reacting to form carbon dioxide gas. The Heidelberg or Gastrocap tests can be employed for confirmation of the results of this test.

Thank you. I'm giving the test a shot for sure. I've tried things like apple cider vinegar as a remedy, but these didn't seem to do much good.

How did you manage to get that stuff down? I tried it once and it smelled and tasted just like straight vinegar. Pretty much had to shoot that stuff.

Dilbeck,
I take baking soda all the time to help my heartburn and shortly after taking it I start to burp up quite a bit so does that mean I have too much acid? I am going to see a docter next friday about it, I have had it for years and I cant take it anymore and I am tired of chewing tums and everything else under the sun.

and the blonde said "RECTUM, Hell damn near killed em!!"

Yeah- it'll take your breath away if you're not careful. It's nasty and I'd much rather take a pill that works without side effects. I'll try the baking soda and water test and, depending on the results, give Betaine Hydrochloride a shot.

flyride, the test calls for 1/4 teaspoon in 1 cup of water. If you mix to much, yes you will burp a lot. Just remember having to much acid is a "Medical Rarity". By the age of 50 you are producing 1/2 of what you did at age 20. After stopping the Prilosec you will have what is called the rebound effect for 3 to 4 days in which you will be flooded with acid. For the first 2 weeks after getting off the drugs it will be a trial and error period on the amount of Bertine Hydrochloride needed for each meal. For lite meals like soups and salads I take 2 500mg capsules, for a hamburger and french fries 3-4, and for a heavy meal like steak and patios I take 4-5 1/2 way through the meal. Until you get the right amount you may experience some heartburn but don't eat any tums, instead use deglycyrrhizinated licorice or DGL, this actually works better than tums and is all natural. You can also get this at any health food store.

I have been using the baking soda thing for the occasional heartburn/indigestion since watching my grandfather do it when I was a child and naturally I had to have a taste.

A couple of belches and about three farts (I reckon it killed the acid from one end to the other)and good to go.

Every doctor had it WRONG all along. Maybe because they get kick backs from the Pharmaceutical industry
Sad but true. Most doctors aren't in medicine to heal people -- they're in it to feed their need to be greedy bastards who only profit off the misery of others.

Good to see you found an alternative solution.

Flyride - Thats what I had. The pain in my chest was like an elephant standing on it. So severe at times I had to take prescription pain medicine to sleep!
The story, this would occur only once in a while. When it first started it would last for a few hours give or take. Nothing helped it seemed but a big teaspoon of baking soda in water, and that did not always work. Once in awhile it would last 8 hours. And then one day it lasted for two days, I was miserable, the pain was terrible. Now all told we are not talking a lot of times here. Maybe once a month over the course of a year. The intensity varied. That last time when it went for two days I thought I was going to die. What is going on here? It was what I ate! The entire time it was what I had eaten and to what degree. That last time of two days? A big arse gyro with RAW ONIONS! Yup raw onions. The other times, a burger or a dog with a slice of raw onions. That was the culprit. Now if they are cooked I can eat them all day long, but raw, no way. I have been free of this for over two years now, not one episode. Check your diet, see if there is something doing this to you. Go figure, the gyro from h*ll that almost got me. It was so full of raw onions they were just ooozing out. Scares me to death to even think about that day.

With too little acid the LES will not close completely and what little I had was being pushed back up into the esophagus. The Prilosec was eliminating the little I had left. With the correct amount of acid the LES will close and your food will digest quickly and move on to the small intestine. This is what throws people off into thinking they must have to much stomach acid. As for side effects of Prilosec and drugs like them It may take years before you start to see these as I did.
