Direct comparison
Nivlek, have you ever flown an actual futaba 401? If so can you say there's ANY difference between the knockoffs and the real thing?

Yes , I've flown a few Futaba GY401 gyros in friends helis , but I've never owned one , I've mostly owned CSM and JR gyros .
I would say that the performance is the same between the clone and the original . If you flew one of my HK450 helis and I told you that it had a genuine Futaba 401 , you would have no reason to doubt it .

As it happens , I've never been a fan boy for the Futaba GY401 , I've always felt that there have been better gyros available for the same sort of money . Examples being the CSM 540 , the CSM 420 , CSM 560 and the JR 490T (500T in the States ) , all of which have more consistant pirouette rates .

I certainly wouldn't suggest anyone fit a G401B in an IC powered heli , I don't know if it would put up with the vibration , but for small electrics , it's not a bad option .

The reason for the slight temperature drift that some people report , which effects tail trim , is that the clone uses a piezo sensor rather that the more expensive silicon sensor which is used in the Futaba GY401 , and piezo sensors are more prone to temperature drift .

However , on the MY401B/G401B gyros that I've been using ,the drift amounts to a rotation of a few degrees of rotation in a minute of hovering at the end of a flight , you really have to look for it to find it , and that's the 'worst' one that I have . So the temperature compensation circuit/software is very good .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Wow, it sounds like you really know what you're talking about, Nivlek. I, too, am not totally happy with the 401, also because of the sluggish piro rates. HOWEVER, with that said, I'm so cheap (and have so many other pursuits) that the 401 is my gyro of choice just from an economy standpoint ( did I mention I'm cheap ). And now with the Chinese clones I have an excuse to be even cheaper!!

Both my daily fliers use the GY401 - one stock, one lightened. . . .

I had a chance to push my 401B today, and Im going to say it flies VERY well for the price. Its basically as good a real 401. The pirouettes are consistent for the most part, and personally I think the 401B accelerates and stops faster. There is barely any noticeable drift. The only thing I had to do was use 2 pieces of foam tape(it is very vibration sensitive), and I opened the gyro up, and placed a piece of foam tape attaching the actual circuit board to the case. This helped the drift disappear. The only thing that was a bit weird was that the dial for the limit of the servo didnt work at all. No big deal because the servo im using travels the right amount.

I highly recommend the MKS480 servo to match with the 401B. Its definitely the best performance for the price.

Amazing you should mention the MKS480 cuz I came to the same conclusion myself and put one on my shopping list at HK yesterday.

As you can see, I've got 3 of the 450s in my double brushless blade and I like them alot, although they've developed just a little gear slop that's absent in my Hitec 65mgs.

I did ask the guys and they toll me that they dint had to do any mods to it that the sensitive part is true on a bigger heli it will show the vibr but in a 250 or 450 max 500 is perfect doble side tape good amount and its fine to absorb the vibr.they told me wend mine gets here i let you know if i did any mod to it.

It will work with only one piece, but I found it performed much better with 2 pieces.

Mitchilito:
Yep, the 480 is a pretty good servo for the money- although i did find that the servo slows down a little at its endpoints. And Ill have to keep an eye on the gear-train, it seems good for now.
