I was dyeing some gears and decided to dunk my CF tail blades and paddles in the solution , they turned out looking really nice, but I don't know if this might have a negative effect on the strength of the parts. Has anyone else tried this or have any input on whether this may degrade the strength of the CF parts?

He didn't dye the black carbon fiber, just the white gelcoat.

Hi, guess what… I make and sell dyes and inks for the packaging industry. This has given me great idea…

PS.. Knowing what goes into making a dye I would be very surprised if it had any effect on the strength of the product. The only thing that I can think is that if you applied a massive coat weight to the blades then you could upset the balance but you would have to be painting it on with a paint brush and do about 10 coats.

Nice job.

I would rather be flying than.......

We've been dying the gears now for a few months and haven't noticed anything unusual with performacne or weakening the part because of the dying process, dropping the gears into some semi boiling water for a few minutes.

Rit Dye on CF
Hey guys, thanks for all of the positive comments.

I noticed on the pictures that I posted that the black portion of the tail blades that is translucent, took some of the dye as well. This created a really neat effect. The orange seems to glow from the inside when in bright or direct sunlight. I thought I would try to get the same effect on the tail fins. I had to get the solution pretty hot, (boiling) and soak the fins for quite a while, but the result was the same, although not as good as what you see on the blades. I guess you could do the same with the frames.

I used equal portions of the powdered dye in Sunshine Orange (43) and Scarlet (5)to get the desired color.

Ever since I got my Velocity I seem to have acquired this weird obsession with orange?? Its not even my favorite color.

That's KQQL, it appears the exposed weive of the CF absorbed the dye

thanks guys, the stuff is easy to use. i used mostly golden yellow. to get the orange. the directions said 3 gallons for 1/2 bottle

I used whole bottle and 1 litter of water ( 1 big mountain dew bottle)
put in water just before boil for 10 min. if you want true yellow just use 1/4 bottle and 1/2 gallon. thanks again

Dye Blades
Anyone tried dying a set of main blades yet? Just wondering if it could be like the tail blades pictured in the thread.

I don't see why not. Give it a try, whats the worst that could happen?... you ruin a perfectly good set of CF blades?....they will end up in the trash eventually...when they smack the ground at warp speed that is. Heck Ive got a set of white Align CF blades on my 450 I'm going to try it tonight. I needed an evening project!!... thanks.
