I built a DIY stereo photo rig and wanted to try it out videoing a heli flight.

Kyle Stacy and the Align 500: 3D in 3D

YouTube has a new 3D feature (can't be embedded) where you can "choose your method" of viewing in a pulldown menu, including colored glasses (no Avatar glasses) and direct/crosseye.

This attempt came out pretty good, but even though the camera frames are in sync, the "blade movement" is out of phase. Will work on that in the future

I watched it parallel which if you can do it is better imo than crossed. Takes practice though.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

How do you do parallel?
I cant make crossed work. I have stared at the screen for 3 minutes and I don't cross.
The glasses are working well if you have them.

I think crossed eyes is easier. All you have to do is crossing your eyes untill you get only one image.

Just practice. To help you, be sure your eyes are exactly at the same level than the videos. You can also put a pencil between the videos and bringing it slowly to your eyes at half distance between the screen and your eyes. (hope my poor english is clear enough!)

I'm glad most of you guys could get it to work~ I'm always amazed by how well-versed model heli pilots are!

I "free view" all the time, but it's tough using the parallel method if the images are further apart than your eyes are seperated. It would require "negative" convergence?

The best glasses to use for color accuracy are red/cyan anachrome. They are "tuned" to monitor color, and include a diopter adjustment to acount for red color shift.
Tons of content around to use them with if you look.

Hey playfair... I didn't realised you did the video! Congratulation! I had a friend who was a big fan of 3D... it was his hobby!

How did you do it? with a double lens camera or with a software?

Vibe- Been toying with 3D for many years.

After shooting at an iceskating rink last month with a borrowed second camera, my wife was impressed enough with the results to give me "permission" to build a dedicated setup.

Of course, this does not necessarilly fund the project, so on a budget I picked up two used Canon SD1000's, and mounted them together (using servo tape) at 2.75" lens spacing.

Synchronization happens mainly with a parallel USB switch. Both cams run CHDK SDM software, which is what the college kids used to take pictures from the balloon they sent into the stratosphere.

By loading this new code onto any Canon point-and-shoot, it's amazing the flexibility it will give (including RAW pics and motion detection) compared to the limited "out of the box" functionality of these cams.
Each stereo pair of pics or vids then gets a final adjustment using imaging software.
