Excuse my ignorance, but is this some sort of alternator/generator? How is the voltage regulated? Does it put drag on the drivetrain?

It has a built in regulator to where it want get past 5.4 volts for a 4.8 volt battery. It's a generator same thing almost as a alternator.

Thanks

Interesting thing about a brushless motor is if you spin it with an external power it'll generate electricity. Raja offers bolt on kits to take this concept and provide an on board generator. It has the appropriate electronics to regulate the power output to the preset voltage out. These are most common on the gassers where we usually run them off the starter shaft (after flipping the one-way over in the clutch). There have been a few guys that have fitted them to glow machines.

Flew my gasser an entire summer without charging the RX pack. TX, heli and a gallon of fuel and I could have flown all day Here is a picture of my Predator with one mounted up.

I think running a generator makes a lot of sense if you want to fly all day and not worry about charging your heli, or if you want to run lots of peripherals such as lights and such.

I'm subscribing. I want one immediately. I HATE charging batteries and I'm always afraid I'm going to loose juice or the battery will fail because it's a turd.
