I was doing some flight tests checking out some motor readings with an eagle tree. Short 4 minute flights with a number of power up, power downs. Then on one flight, heli was spinning out of control. I thought it was the belt slipping, then I did a test of the gyro and it somehow changed it's reverse setting. I never touched the reset program button on the gyro. I originally set up the gyro w/ the PC interface but did not have it handy so I used the button interface to set the reverse. I am not sure what else was reset. I had about 4 flawless test flights on this gyro to this poing. After adjusting the reverse setting, I had one more test hover and then was done for the day.

Anyone have the GY520 forget it's settings on them?

I had my futaba gy520 loose its hold after about 45 seconds in the air.
It was on a trex 500 clone.
I put it on a 450 and flew it 4-5 times with no issue.
I since then grounded the tail boom on my 500 and moved the esc to the nose of the heli.
I haven't been able to fly it yet but the testing on my turn table looks good.

Hi Melnic!

I experienced a similar problem with the GY520 we use for Aerial Photography work. After 4 flights that day lasting 8 minutes each, our heli suddenly pirouetted violently upon take off. My partner pilot was quick to react to land immediately and avoided a major crash. At first we thought it was the BLS251 going bad.. but after replacing it with a new one on site, there were still no rudder movement despite of any rudder stick inputs on the Tx.. then we connected a non BLS251 servo and it worked! The GY520 seemed to have forgotten its settings and reset to its factory default.

Our 26cc gasser is equipped with an on-board generator outputting 5.4v to charge the 4.8vNiMh. We use a 5.1v step down on the BLS251.

We've been using the same setup prior to switching to the GY520 from GY401 with no problems encountered.

I also heard some unconfirmed issues with some batches of the BLS251s going bad even just after a few flights..

Safety is our number one concern when doing AP work.. Something like this happening on the GY520, even though how rare it may be, is simply unacceptable.

Now after experiencing this, we don't have confidence anymore of flying with a GY520 for our AP work especially for over water shoots out of fear it might RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULT inflight. We reverted back to our tried and tested GY401 with 9254 wherein its depreciation is more predictable.

Any ideas what might have caused the GY520 to reset by itself? Overheating BLS251? Over voltage or under? Should I connect the 5.1v step down on the GY520 instead of just directly on the BLS251?

Gents,

Reset to factory settings by itself are big words. I am not convinced it is possible. I own one myself, and have severals friends wih GY520's.

Most likely a temperature, voltage or setup problem.

BTW mine has close to 200 flights on, never failed, still the same Gyro and servo combo, takes a beating every weekend.

Heinz,

Your experience is similar to mine. I have quite a few of these in operation with no issues at all.

If there is a defect in the one as described by the original poster (and it sounds like there might be), that would certainly not be reason to condemn all GY520's.

Ive had a Mini-G reset in flight due to a voltage drop, it was my fault for using a 5amp BEC with high power servos (DS620's), it would do it when pitch pumping. Worth looking into.

60% of the time, it works every time!

Here's one maybe you guys could answer for me. I have a dx7 radio and a new 520. Should I be able to flip the gear switch and be able to go into normal mode? Like I could with the 401. I think i might have something messed up, but maybe not.

Set channel 5 to gear mode and not gyro sense.
That's how my DX7's are all set up. that's the default for Heli Mode.
YES, then you can go in and out as well as do the toggle trick to reset the gyro.

Would I lose the gyro sense screen then?
