I am setting up my 500 with the castle vertigo motor and the ice 100 esc but have a few questions. The way these instructions are written it is difficult for me to tell whether or not I need an external BEC? The instructions say that the esc I have (ICE 100) has a switchable BEC but I do not see a switch anywhere so they must be talking about a setting that can be switched utilizing the programmer. And it does not say anwhere on it or the packaging that it is HV. Do I need a HV esc? I guess I have two questions.
1. Is the "on board" BEC an internal programable thing?
2. Do I need HV for this set up? (vertigo motor 3424 1770kv)

One other question? I am running a fut 9650 for tail rotor. Do I need a step down for volts with this setup? I am giving away the fact that I know very little about electronics.

Thanks for your help.

Did he crash? Dang, I missed it!

The BEC is on board and programmable. The computer interface is a very nice feature and is the way I programmed mine.

You don't need a HV ESc and the 100 is an overkill for the 500.. even though I have one for mine also.

I run my GY520's and S9257's on 6 volts and I run one GY401 with S9650 on 6 volts and one on 5 volts.

Here is a link for my Ice 100 on the stock Align Motor and Hyperion G3-VX2600-6S.

yeah, my hk 500 will soon be graced with an ice 100 too, not enough of a price difference between the ice 100 and 75 to warrant the 75...especially considering the market for resale.

the 100 is fine on the 500. usually the hv is for 10s and up. there is a internall bec on the icee 100 think it is set for 5v unless changed. so to check this check the voltage at the black and red wire in the rx connector

Make sure that your internal bec is rated to handle the amps your servos will draw. If not you could lose power. Most people go with an external bec that is rated much higher like the CC 10

Its cheap insurance.

Not sure if you are running higher than 6s but the one in the link is only rated to 6s.

There are two types of BEC, Linear and Switching. The internal BEC in the Ice 100 is a 5 amp Switching BEC. The only thing that is programmable on it is the voltage in 0.1 volt increments from 5-7 volts. You may need a step down between gyro and rudder servo depending on the voltage you set the BEC at.

Esprit has a few.

The on board BEC on the ICE is more than enough for the 500. I have the 75 Amp and never had problems. I have it set for 6Volts, I run three 9650s and a full size 9254 stepped down with Mini-G gyro. The ICE works great. Make sure you run Gov mode. I have the stock 500L motor with a 14T pinion on 35C and 45C batteries and the Heli screams at 2700 rpm on Idle Up 2. Go to RcGroups.com, Castle has a huge support forum there and they answer all your questions, there is great information and help.

No step down neede for the 9650, it can run at 6.0 Volts.

hope this helps.

At the precipice, we change!
