I'm just curious if there are any fellow home designers here. Have you experienced a bit of a slow down in the last twleve months. We've slowed to a halt here in Houston. It's been bleak all year actually. I'm not ready to start seeking a new career, although I have had to pick up a different job to make ends meet. I'm thinking though that business should start picking back up by late summer. What's your opinion on our industry in general and it's future.

thanks,
Rob.

I'm not a designer but I am a construction manager for a nationwide home builder. The site I work at in Philadelphia, building condos and townhouses, has done well considering what the market has done over the last 2 years. Our sales have slowed but we still have almost 75 in production and I just ordered lumber and panels for a 12 unit townhouse building. And we are waiting to reach 30% sold in another condo building before we start building. I believe you are correct about the market turning by summer, as long as unemployment stops going up.

Who raised the ground since I took off?

been designing here locally for 25 years now. We've had some ups and downs over the years, but for me it's been a really bad 3 years now, almost 4. For 15 years I worked as lead designer for a few civil engineering firms designing roads, bridges, etc. and had my home design company on the side. Ten years ago I mad the leap and went full time and did consulting for my old eng. firms part time. The first 6 years or so were just plain ridiculous. Made as much as I cared to, turned away a lot of work, played a lot of golf, etc. Man, those WERE the days.
The last 3 have been dreadful. I went to work for one of my GC's I design for as his const. super, which was fun, but then he decided to quit building til things turned around a little.
That being said, this year is starting off with a bang, with a large island home on the boards (in the CPU actually) and a VERY large home in Naples. All of these projects are also wanting me to run the jobs as well, so there may be some hope for the first time in several years.
We've been especially hurt in my area. Construction is our ONLY industry to speak of here.

it's the most optimistic I've been in about 4 years now. We'll see if it keeps up.
