I am not at all an electronically inclined individual so I could use some help. I just purchased a 500 esp with all the stock electronics (motor, esc, servos). The guy who had it before was running 6s and I will be running 8s. What will I need to redo here? Will the esc handle 8s? Thanks for your help.

Did he crash? Dang, I missed it!

I too think that 8S is a little over kill for a T-Rex 500 running 425mm blades. Used to run 6S in a 600, therefore 6S in a 500, IMHO, is good enough. I have 820 flights on my 500 on 6S batteries and runs great for me.

6s on the little 500 heli is ballistic! I can't even imagine 8s and really don't even see the need considering that the 500 on 6s doesn't even really pull many amps. .

But to answer your question you will need a HV (high voltage) esc and a seperate BEC for sure.

If I may ask what is your reasoning for going to 8s?

Why 8s
Well, I had a rave 4s 450 and the trex 500 and wanted to fly both helis on the same batteries. So I setup the trex to be able to fly on two 4s batteries. I sold the rave and now have two 500's. The batteries are cheaper and do really well.

Besides adding a HV Esc you might want to go down on you're pinion gear also. Go to http://www.readyheli.com and check out MrMel headspeed calculator.

It's not a good idea to run two different batteries in series when they have been treated differently... One is going to start getting more juice pulled and it will b harsh on your batteries

Thanks for the info
Well, now that I have decided on the heli that I am going to stick with (the 500), maybe I can sell all these batteries and go 3s packs. I just have a lot invested in four 4cellpro chargers and dont want to mess with any higher than that.

I'm building an 8S 500 right now. Don't worry, you'll love it if you do, but you will need an appropriate motor/HV ESC/BEC for the application. I'm using a Neu 1706 motor, Jazz ESC, and SportBEC.

Like it was mentioned though, you don't want to pair up used packs. You'll want them run together from new for the best/longest lasting results.

Thanks. Actually the 500 that I have had is running on 8s and it is great. Just used the right pinion to get the head speed down. So I will be going 8s on this new one as well more than likely. What head speed are you running on yours?

I plan to run around 2900 governed, but I probably will end up not needing that and running less.

I've been running 8s on my TRex 500 for about a year now, although not flying nearly as much as I used to, using 2 4s 2200 Flightpower batteries. It's an awesome setup!
