Hi

Does the YS 50 st comes with the low speed needle already setup from factory or it need to be adjusted to what says on the manual ? (It is a brand new engine). Also what fuel is better for this engine, CY Wildcat 30% or Cool Power 30% ? will break-in the engine soon...

Thanks !!

I got mine not so long ago, I do not remember how the needles were set
- I have anyway set them by the manual. I am running CoolPower 30 Heli
and the motor runs very well. I did not have that much luck with CP 15%
( CP30 has low viscosity oil while CP15 uses high viscosity oil )
- on CP15 the idle was not as stable and it needed some 2 turns open
for the low speed needle - so I did not bother beyond a short try...

I am using Hatori 522 tuned muffler and I found that the engine
runs better with the high speed needle opened around 1/4 turn more
from the recommended 1 1/2 turns open - I guess it's due to slight
leaning out by the tuned muffler.

The YS50 motor did not seem to need any extensive break-in
- I just hovered the heli at a moderate head speed for a tank
or two ( a short 15-30 second hover, landing, 1/2 minute idle
and so on ). I think I have set the main needle to 2 turns open
for that time, now it's about 1 3/4 turns open.
I do not have access to CY Wildcat 30% so I can not comment on that..

Ok Smok thanks for the info. Will check the low speed needle setting just in case. The first few tanks probably will be with Wildcat CY 30% but later i'm planning to switch back to CoolPower 30%. Although CP have a lower oil viscosity the engines runs smoother on it (my opinion). The pipe will be a CY MP5 50.

I set my needles as the manual and did the alternating periods of hover and idle as Smok did. After two tanks I flew arounf forward flight and looped and rolled, but FF was usually 1-1.5 minutes long. After 1 gallon it is well broken-in. I used CP 30%, OS#8, and a SB50 Hatori muffler.
Wild Cat 30% will work fine. The YS 50ST loves 30%. And finally, whatever you do, don't rush leaning it out. YS engines have a lower tolerance to lean runs. I've seen guys blow thru rings, liners and pistons in seconds with less than a gallon. After being an OS guy for years, I tried YS and now that's all I use. It makes plenty of power even if a little rich.

Today the YS took his first 4 tanks. It is about 2 turns on the hi speed needle and 1 on the idle needle. This engine have good power. Have a little trouble hanging on idle. With the glow nicad applied it works just fine. But without it, it idles for a few seconds and then die. I noticed that the idle is a little rough, like the engine was leaning for some time and them it idles normally. When I got to the house I double check the needles settings and noticed that the low speed needle was set to less than a (1)turn. Don't know if that was causing the rough idle. Set it back to 1 turn like the manual said. I will check back later at the field...

Today I burn a couple of tanks more on the engine. The rough idle was my fault. The low speed needle was setted incorrectly. It was 1/4 turn more closed than the 1 turn the manual intructs. Set to 1 turn open a guest what ? The engine idles for ever and the roughness desappeared !! With the CY 30% the engine runs fine and cool, but the next gallon will be CP 30%.

I'm running the engine in combination with a CY MP5 50 SB pipe... My next question for does of you who have more experience with this engine... What is the best muffler for it ?? CY MP, Align 50 muffler, Hatori, etc. ???

Thanks all !!!

I ran my YS50ST on a Hatori 522 for the last year.

Solid as a rock and I hardly touched the needles winter or summer.

I've been using a Hatori SAB50 Bobby Watts Special with my YS 50ST and it runs like an electric motor, smooth.
