I haven't had a chance to try this yet. Has anyone retro-fitted or replaced the mail rotor/swash and tail units on the AXE 400 3D with
the clone metal units available for the TREX 450? Is the main shaft
the same or similar size and will the tail unit clamp/fit on the tail boom?

Easy to upgrade with 450 CLONE heads and tails
Good news. Well first, not so good, I back-flipped my AXE 400 3D into the snow inverted. As we all know, TH has all the parts. The bird does fly well, rolls, flips and is a bargain when purchased RTF on sale. Now for the good part, I had a big box of TREX 450 parts and the tailbooms, drive gears, main shafts, feathering spindles, mixers, blade grips are all the same size as the AXE 400 3D. The only thing you have to watch out for is the swash. Unlike the TREX, the AXE 400 3D swash is a single ball forward, and the two 120 degree balls backside with an anti rotation guide pin in between. So mine will be sporting lots of metal upgrades, mixers, cages, head block. That answers the question I posed earlier. You can buy a clone TREX 450 mainrotor and tailrotor and upgrade your AXE 400. If you go to the longer SE V2 tailboom you will need the longer belt. Also the Align booms only have one slot at the front of the boom, so you can either grind off the alignment nub in one of the frame halves or dremel an opposing slot in the boom, very easy and fast to do. So you can go to TH for original parts, Xheli for clone parts, and the best place for all FLAVORS of TREX 450 parts is http://WWW.TECH-MP.COM.

Did it
Hey,

I have done this conversion. I used the copterX head and tail kit. I am currently using the stock servos mounted two up front and spaced out about 2mm each so the servos fit. The other trick I used was to get the long ball links from the helimax mx450xs swash. This allows the links to be closer to straight. If you can find thicker servo horns, you will be able to mount the ball links on the inside to avoid needing the longer ball mounts from the MX. The links will need to be about 39mm or 40mm long center to center for all three swash points. I am using a gy401 and have found that I need to get a digital servo for the tail as it is just way to fast for the 3114 servo that comes on the axe400. Of course you will need to reprogram your TX as well. all in all, even with the wicked tail wag I have, the heli is much more precise and parts are now much easier to find!
