Steve try shooting in Aperture priority for a shot like that f5.6 would have been good, it would produce a slightly blurry background and a sharp image.

I was not taking a picture of the bird , the bird flew in at the time I snapped the shutter , it surprised the crap out of me to see that in the view finder ! I was only a few feet away from it, last thing I expected to happen
