Our heli group is falling apart, we have dwindled to a few guys that show up every week
The problem with that is when new people do stop by on a Wednesday or saturday there is no one there ! Hard to get more people involved if they can't see it first hand.
We all need to keep this hobby moving forward or we will be diminished to flying planes.

Agreed Steve, I keep telling my wife that I can see the heli's at our field going away within a year or two at this rate which is really sad in my opinion, feels like within a 2 year period we have gone down to about a third of the guys that it used to be, it's so hard to even find a field that has any kind of heli group around and now this one is also disappearing.

Not sure exactly what is causing it ? Have guys lost the passion for flying ? Are they sick of the cost ? Are they to crunched for time ? I can say that personally the cost can be difficult at times and the time can be tuff as well but I try to make time to get out for at least a couple hours when I can . Steve what has happened with Hung's friend that was coming out to try to learn to fly ? Seems like there were a couple newbies that i had seen this year that were coming to check it out but now have dissapeared ?

All I can say it that I hope it gets better instead of worse as I would hate to see this great group of what I would consider to be my friends dissapear, I can fly in my backyard but to me half the fun is hanging out with friends that have the same interest and sharing some laughs

I can certainly agree that I fall into that category. The last year and half I have probably only been out 10 times total. I still enjoy flying but enjoy seeing you guys more. I have a lot of self inflicted obligations that I am trying to complete; new deck, new garage that I don't seem to be able to work on during the week because of work. I hope the group can hold together and keep going.

I can see how it is hard for a new person unless they come out to the field. Before I made it out to Dorr I got a lot of bad information from people who didn't know much. I would have to spend $1,000 on a used 450 and I would probably just crash it. I am glad Lee was around krams to tell me where to go and to contact steve. Until you come out to Dorr on wed or sat you are not going to find anything about helicopters in GR. Ryder's had a row of Raptor parts and a few blade micros but that was it. Now a guy with an interest has seen something about drones. A stop at Best Buy will get him a complete package ready to go that will work, and with average intelligence, not crash. They never make it the next step to ask a hobby person where they can go it find help or advice.
Now I would direct a new person to a decent used 550 size for $400. Every few months some pop up here and with some set up help it would be the best way to start.

I think what would help is a helicopter hand out. It would talk about the basic equipment needed, average new and used costs, how a helicopter flys, what the controls do, and contact info for more help. Krams had one, for airplanes, and decades ago I found it very useful. It was only two pages but it answered the questions I had. Several should be out at the field and obvious to someone who comes out when no one is there.
A helicopter FAQ page on the web site would help as well.

Why did Tom, John (both) and Jeff stop coming?

Well I know for my part the school program I'm doing right now is kicking my butt. I figured I would at the very least pay my dues whether I can fly or not. I'll be done with the program in April and hope to fly a lot next year.....If I don't then I'll need to be having a hanger garage sale because I'm trying to at least learn to be a better heli mechanic and just built two more

Having said that I stopped into the Hobby Town in Kalamazoo the other day and noticed they only had a few park flyer, micro airplanes out. They use to have a LOT of airplanes on display. Just out of curiosity I asked about it and they said "Industry-wide, aircraft sales are down" They had a few ideas why including the FAA registration and blah, blah, blah. I'm not sure if they know but I did think it was interesting.

I like the ideas you guys have, I put together a flyer last year about the field posted them around, maybe I can do that again this spring...or if we get a hand out with the basics and field info I'd be happy to post them around as I'm wondering about. I might be able to put something on the employee page at work, long shot but might draw some interest.

12 - 1 Dan and his friend are pretty regular at 5. They weren't waiting until the helicopters leave. Last time they thought I was alone all day so they didn't even know any helicopter guys come out.
