It is only 1 number. Don't have to register all of them. You are just registering yourself. Then the number you get from the FAA has to be put on all your birds.

That was what the AMA is for. The AMA should coordinated all their member's numbers with the FAA. If they can't even manage that then what is the point. All those dues everyone pays should be worth something other than the yearly letter to give them more money.

After all that I registered because I am cheap, it is free until Jan21, and there is no way it is not staying around.

Now they can get you two ways
- If you do one of the 5 bad things you say you won't during sign up they got you.

- If you don't register and a fed spot checks the field they got you for up to $27,000

At some point I can see them going out and making a few examples to encourage everyone to get in line.

Now I guess it need to get a white sharpie and make several copies of my UAS license.

I wonder how many offices and jobs they created to run this new program.

On the plus side, when all those Islamic extreme jihad evil doers register their bomb drones we will know where to get them, unless of course they would dare not register their drone before putting a bomb on it. In that case none of this would make any difference.

Doesn't the yearly dues cover you for insurance in case of a mishaps? That's for something but yes I believe it should be coordinated with the ama and faa so that you get an far number when you become an ama member or are an existing member. But what started all of this, the manufacture that compiled all these systems so that anybody can go out and fly one now. Where before you had to some what coordinated.

Yes there is insurance but if you look at their web site they make a big deal about government lobbying and involvement to protect the hobby. I think there was another outfit, sportsman, that was just pure insurance. Anyway, AMA #, AMA policies, and the AMA card should cover the identification issue for those that have been in the hobby. Now you have another piece of paper to keep track of to show at events to be legal.

When the below average redneck could put down $300 and the next day fly a drone over the white house fence or in Yellowstone park I knew this had to happen. Actually I thought it would be a lot more restrictive than just signing up once and putting a number on you machine.

They probably do to give them more leverage. They could say, we have X members not in your system, work with us. The FAA went around them by offering $5 back if you sign up now. Kind of like a company offering a bonus while the union threatens to strike.

ONLY our government could concoct such a useless program. As with most things this will do nothing to curb the jackasses from doing what they do best and will inconvenience the law abiding. At worst, and most likely, this is merely step 1 in putting a stranglehold on all of us. I believe the AMA has been in bed with the FAA from the very beginning drooling over the potential new millions of drone flyers that they could get to join their club.

As for the AMA insurance, it is a joke. It only pays after every other insurance avenue has been exhausted. Their $75 yearly fee is not that competitive. I have $1 million umbrella policy that covers me for everything, not just RC flying, that only cost $125 a year.

these jackass drone fliers will never join a club, that would mean they would learn that they can't just fly them anywhere they want. for most of them, when they break their new Christmas present that will be the end of it. The others will have a bad crash and that will be the end of it, when they find out how much it cost to repair. We all know the components don't last forever!

I think the Ama should have been fighting harder. All of us cannot let our bird get out of sight or its bye bye birdie! I cannot see how we people who fly at our field should be subject to any more governmental control.
Didn't someone write a big long paper about such things?

I think they will get a crap load of drone flyers to join the AMA eventually. I heard that Best Buy was offering a "free" AMA membership with the purchase of a drone at Christmas time. This is why the AMA embraced the drones from the very beginning. 200,000 current AMA members is peanuts compared to the millions of drones that have been sold during Christmas.

In my opinion the AMA sold out the traditional RC flyers simply for to the opportunity to get a piece of the drone business. I heard somewhere they were anticipating 3 million drones to be sold during Christmas. If the AMA gets just 10% of those people to join they more than double their membership.

For the four years I've been in the AMA I've heard a lot of bitching about how little coverage heli's receive in that rag of magazine they publish every month. Let's watch and see how quickly the airplane and heli stuff get reduced while their new found gold mine of drones gets increased coverage.

My brother-in-law has been a pilot for FedEx for 30 years and drones are of little to no concern for them. However, he has been blinded by assholes pointing lasers at aircraft during landing numerous times and yet I see the FAA doing nothing to curb laser pointer usage.

He is also an RC planker so he has been in the AMA for about 45 years and is very disappointed with their selling out. He did mention to me that there is discussions going on about a new "community based" organization starting up that would not support anything hobby based that flies beyond line of sight. Not sure it will ever go anywhere but I would support it.
