Too bad the 9303, 9503 and the 12X can't compare.

As much as the 12X guys (in particular) wish to deny it, -
-- it is a fact !

Now the 12X has all kinds of different features it can boast of and that too is true. Simply "Pay your money and make your choice."

One of the earlier posts made a point about fast servos.
If you are after speed you use both. I do.

Just seems like the $1500 12X should allow some sort of "firmware upgrade"

It's like buying a $1500 MacBook and not being able to use new software, and then a year later a $300 Dell comes along and has twice the speed.

I really like my 12X, but I sort of feel ripped off every time I see one of these DX7SE vs DX7 threads.

I don't blame you for that.
I would feel 'skizzeled' too.

I flew the 10X for 5 years and then went to the DX7 the day it was announced. I found that even the DX7 had more options than I used.

Years ago the top of the line radio was none too good. Today the lower end has more than you need. Reliability is at an unheard of level of excellence.

Times have changed and we're presently caught in the transition period.

Yeah I would say there definately is a difference between the speed but possibly more of a difference with the higher resolution of control. There are still lots of people out there that can out-fly a decent pilot on a dx7Se with just a regular DX7. I've seen it a number of times. The DX7 is still a great radio that also has a port for simulator use.
