My first R/C helicopter was the Schlueter semiscale AH-1G Bell Cobra kit which I received from Dieter in February 1971 and flew for the first time in April of that year. Hard to believe it is 49 years ago.

First Heli
GMP Rebel 1990
Airplane futaba radio, S-148 servos, fixed pitch, Enya 35 airplane engine, heliball muffler, no gyro (first month or so!!)
It taught me how to chase myself around the back yard, and NOT to hover without an exit behind you!! training gear was dowels with wiffle balls.. so at first it was like running a rc car!! Eventually, it taught me to hover and actually first basic forward flights.... have a brand new one, set up the same as original hanging in my shop!!

A Micro Mold Lark, circa 1980, a fixed pitch "machine" with a HB25 engine.....followed shortly thereafter by a Schluter Miniboy with a Webra 40!

Difference was like night and day...!

Oh dear I can't quote Barrys message, I also started with the Micromold Lark with an OS 35FP,
http://www.air-helicopter.com/What-...i_10681024.html
as it was a brass bushed engine it did overheat, and was fun till i actually bought a cheap British Gyro (£50 )which made it flyable,
Next was the Kavan ranger, two sheets of aluminium and a Rossi .60,,
