Whirlybird 505 again...
Hi Tripledeucer,

Did you ever get any successful flying time out of the Du-Bro 505? Here's mine, way far from my first heli but I like to share

Watch at YouTube

Truly Amazing, Steve!! Under control all through the flight. I didn't realize that they actually flew! Must be the pilot. Ken

Few Flew...
Ken, considering that the 505 was the very first "affordable" R/C heli for most people in the early-to-mid 70's, how many of them were successful at flight? I'd say less than 1% of the models that sold. Anybody want to challenge that estimation? My first heli was also a Du-Bro product but their second heli, the more conventional and far larger Hughes 300. It didn't see much flight time in 1974, the year I built it, either.

Read some of the comments on that youtube video's page for more detailed info on the Whirlybird.

Steve
I guess I was one of the 1% that flew the 505. I have some photos of me flying it back in 1972. I was even fortunate enough to go to Dubro, while being on buisness in Illinois. Got to have dinner with Dave Gray & his wife. I'll look for the photos & try to post them here.
Still working on restoring a Cricket to bring to IRCHA.

Hi Steve, I never really got any good flights as I was a rank beginer. Always about 3 feet high and headed for the fence. If I had one now, I could fly it like you were doing in the vid. I never really learned to fly a heli until I got my Cricket. Before that I did own a DuBro Shark and also a small one called the Tri-star. It looked like a full size Scorpion heli. I don't see much mention of them on here. I also built a Kavan Jet Ranger before the Cricket came along.
Good job flying the 505.

Mark

First Heli
My first was the Kavan Bell Jet Ranger in the mid 80's. It had a FOX 61 with a pump, Flew it okay, but I changed it out with a Rossi 65(much better). Kraft 7 channel radio. Seems like a million years ago.

I bought a Baron 20 from Cirrus Hobbies after watching a few guys at our field messing around with a Heliboy. Mid to late 80's
4 servos, mechanical throttle/pitch mixing, no gyro, airplane radio.
Upgraded to a Baron 28 with a mechanical gyro, still airplane 4 ch radio. Took me a solid year, every weekend to learn to hover and start forward flight. I don't think all the beer really helped.
I had a stack of bent side frames about 12" tall before I learned how to land. Crash, mail order Monday, build, fly on Sunday.
I did move on to a GMP Cobra, Legend, ExCell 60 with Heli radios. Was out of the hobby for about 15 years.

First heli never flew. It was an american Revolution, fixed pitch. Was given to me.
So my first real heli was a GMP Cobra. Still have it, and fly it

1977 Dubro Tri Star. It's last flight was when I threw it into the trash can. I wish I had it back now.

First Helicopter
My first was a GMP Cricket with out a gyro. I actually learned to hover and fly forward with this fine machine. June 1983. The SX-81 was my second machine. Check out my Members only jacket and that hair. What was I thinking. Also notice my car, no not the corvette, mine was the 1973 VW Thing. That is my new Century VII radio.

Mine was a GMP Cricket with an OS 28F and Heloball. Myself and two friends would get together with our crickets nearly every weekend...good times.
