I am thinking about getting a cheap EXI 450 trex clone for night flying. I have some hs 81's and was thinking about sticking one on the tail with a cheap MKS 191 gyro that I bought for my 3D plane (failed at holding tail during torque rolls BTW). I'm not planing on hard 3D with a night heli but would like to give the neighbors something to talk about.
The specs on the 81 are:
Weight: .67oz/19g. Torque: 42/49oz-in. (3/3.5 kg-cm) 0.09sec.
which seems ok to drive the tail on a 450.

What are your thoughts?

I used an HS81 on the tail of an old Trex 450. I learned my first loops and rolls with that heli and it held fine.

Funky Trex, exactly the same story with me! I used it with a GY240 and I could turn the gain up to 100% and no wag! Its a fast servo just dont use it in DS mode!

60% of the time, it works every time!

Another vote for the HS81. I had one on my TREX back when, and now I have one on my EXI. Great cheap analog tail servo.

A soul in tension is learning to fly

I see you used a gy240. What other gyros did you guys use? I want to go cheap on my night bird. I want something that will hold well though with the hs 81.

I used a 401 with mine. I ran the same combo on a Mini Titan for a short time too. It worked good for the price... although I was just doing some simple flips and rolls with them. I am not sure how it would work with hard 3D flying.

A bad tail setup can make a great heli fly horrible. I wouldn't try to save too much money or the performance will probably suffer.

My set up was a 401 and the hs81. Awesome setup for my style of flying.

That's it, I've tried a cheap gyro (mks 390) from hobby city on my current rex 450 with 9650 on tail and it was horrible. I'm getting another gy401 and will try the hs 81 on my current rex just to see how well it works. Thank God I didn't take off the gy 401. Just put the cheapo gyro beside it.
