I had a wondering question. I know that when you do a blade stop auto that you put in positive pitch until the blades almost come to a stop and then add negative back in to get the blades spinning again.
The question is what if you kept positive pitch in once the blades came to a stop. Will they start to spin the opposite direction and if so could you let the blades gain momentum and then flare by giving negative pitch to land?

i was just thinking the same thing! i guess if you did some clutch work and a lot of practice it could be done! (thinking of physics and such)

but thats just me, other people might have completely different opinions.

they'd certainly start to spin the other direction but stability will be a serious issue. The blades chordwise CG will be opposite and the airfoil shape is of course backwards. I suspect small cyclic and collective inputs would result in violent reactions.

Now that you mentioned it, I bet soon we will see attempts on Youtube! That's how amazing tricks come about. I thought you were dreaming when I was reading this thread but I want to see this trick done. Just not buy me! Jojo

then if your main rotation is backwards, of course as will your tail and no tail bite at all, sounds like disaster to me, we'll let you try first, please show video and carnage, lol..

When I first started this hobby I accidentally put some blades on backwards, and they actually flew. The cyclic was very pitchy, but I did hovered the heli and flew forward some. What made me question the blades is that they sounded different.

Since your doing an auto you do not have to worry about the clutch as the engine is not engaged.

To get blades fast after stopping you will need to be out of sight and then stability and tail issues come into play then if you need to bail out it can be messy.

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

If I remember my Superman comic books properly, theoretically the heli would go backwards in time.

wouldnt the gyro need to be reversed too???? Just a thought...tail backwards spinning. control backwards means the gyro would have to perform backwards too. I might be wrong but this has been brought up at our field before and we get the same answers all the time....

I guess you would need to have the tail servo reversed, or you could do it with the heli that does not have a driven tail when the motor is not engaged.

I think what you'll find in doing the trailing edge leading is too much drag and
the angle of attack would not be as reliable...not to mention...if you do try this...you had better have a LOT of ALTITUDE.

I flew in VietNam and before I got sick (commercially)...we call a thing known as the "dead man's curve"...Minium altitude that a safe auto can be done. We imediate dial in negative pitch to utilize the knetic engry stored already in the main blades.

What you're suggesting is to loose all of the heads energy and rely on the rate of excelleration due to gravity to rebuild that speed that you have already lost.

I'd give it a try with someone elses heli to see if the theroy would hold up....LOL

Just read the last of the original post...and I can't see how dialing negative pitch
into a counter clockwise ratation would give anything; but screwing the heli into the ground.....

.........................wow REALLY?..... REVERSE THE GYRO?! wtf people just because the blades are spining reverse doesnt mean rudder inputes are reversed (gyro controls pitch and pitch isnt changed by the reversing of blades) ..... the inputs are still int he correct spot just the blades are going the wrong way so as far as cyclic it WOULD be reversed because the force is applied 1/4 turn past the input point so it would be __|__ if the | is the input point then _ would be normal force point where if the blades were goign in reverse direction _ would be the force point
