I will not risk a couple of thousand dollar helicopter on a hundred dollar electronic device.

It is the same software as in the helicomand , flymentor is banned for sale in Germany as helicommand guys took the legal action against them for stealing the software which they were developing for years and the court rendered the decision !

It may have the same software but it doesn't work the same way. It does work but very glitchy and full of problems. I definitely do not recommend using it on a helicopter with any value. I am still playing with one on one of my Trex 450. It is more frustrating than fun but I am stubborn. The tail gyro will work all the way down to zero percent gain. That cannot be the same software as the HeliCommand. The HeliCommand may not have a good tail gyro but at least it works properly.

I do not have the one but all those who have state that the gyro is very bad and one should still use the separate gyro.
Here you have the article about the helicommand legal action :

No, it is a direct copy of the Heli Command 3A.

Flymentor
If you are doing had 3D then you may want to use a separate gyro. I have a friend using one for scale and the gyro seems to work fine for FFF sport and scale flying but is not equal to a Spartan or other high end gyro. So depends on your style and need. It is not a mems based gyro but more like a last generation gyro.

Regarding the Flymentor being an exact copy I have both and they are not the same physically, user interface, parameters or in setup etc. They are very similar in concept and HC claims to have the concept patented in Germany. The allegation as I read it the statements by HC is that since it takes so many years of engineering and research to develop such capabilities. HC seems to say that since KDS just came out with a equal systems and since the concept is very similar that KDS must have copied the code. However there does not yet seem to be any detail and I have not seen HC patent. From looking at the differences between the two the code is clearly not identical but the devil is in the details. Is some of the internal code borrowed? Don't know. This is a typical action a company would take if they suspect such infringement but it is not definitive of infringement. At them moment they cannot sell in Germany. Nor is there action elsewhere. At this point it is an injunction and KDS did not appear but has the right to and to appeal. Having been involved in a number of patent cases in the semiconductor arena I would not make any judgments. Most of these types of suites prove invalid when the discovery and the details are brought to light. They also can cost millions to fight so KDS could just give up Germany even if not in infringement. It is both a legal and business decision.

Personally having fooled around with DIY autopilots it is clear the technology and knowledge to implement such systems are in the public realm. Cheap low powered processors that can do the handle the calculations including Kalman filtering, as well low cost IMU units are becoming commonplace. I don't think KDS would need to steal the code or design. At the end of the day the courts will be the decider. Everyone in this industry seems to be saying clone nowadays. Having been on both ends of the lawsuit stick and been right and wrong I am not going to be too quick to judge. The cat can be skinned many ways. Look at all the CPU companies that have processers that are compatible. Now this is at ask orders of magnitude more complex and difficult and is done mostly without infringement. But many lawsuits still fly around again most fall to the wayside or being marketing ploys. I don’t see Probar and Skookum and Inertia RC and Rondo and other stabilization manufacturers claiming lawsuit. Give two people a stone and a stick and they will figure out how to make a club. Give them a wheel and they will figure out how to make cart. Knowledge flows and invention depends and available technology. This is not rocket science anymore. People are taking the guts out of Wii controllers and making gyros for robotic applications – two wheeled robots that self right. I expect to see a lot more capability to come out at lower cost and the previous developers at higher cost are not to going to be happy. In the tech industry you have to run to stay alive. RC is becoming part of the tech industry, Get your sneakers on!!!!

Helicommand versus Flightmentor
Pellicle, excellent post. You could not have put it better! THANKS. Basically both units are three gyros and gyros are certainly common knowledge to-day. We actually put two good heading hold gyros on a heli that needs no mixing because the mixing is done mechanically. It worked rather much like the HC 3 A. Our company has a dozen Helicommands of all types, except the Profi because the Germans were ****** (find the correct word yourself) enough to require our company to sign a license agreement awarding them a huge sum in case the Finnish Armed Forces, who are our sole client (we have been producing drones for them since 1968) would use the Profi for something the German company would not approve of. We are now using a Chinese GPS system instead. And as we belong to the EU just like Germany that makes us sad. We also tested a few units of the Flymentor. Contrary to what someone on this forum wrote after first saying the unit was ok, we have had no problems. But we cannot really make valid claims, 3 units are not enough for that nor the hours logged until now. With a dozen HC and many hours we do know that 8 out of 12 have had to be sent for service, in spite of the fact that they were used only in electric helis. We do want to stress they were all repaired free of charge, some even after the warranty had expired and they do a good job of keeping a heli horizonantal. The Germans have known for years that the tail gyro in the HC is not really what they claim it to be, heading hold, and done nothing about it. The Flymentors tail gyro is not really heading hold either, but it is if anything, a little better than the HC. Horizontal hold is equal. Kaarlo von Freymann

For those who maybe not know, Crazy Joe is the name behind which the Helicommand producer’s product manager hides. (Captron Electronic GmbH of Germany) I leave it to you, whether he or Captron should be "kicked" for that and whether you have trust in posts posted by a product manager in disguise.).
It was bad syntax on my side to write "The Germans have known for years that the tail gyro in the HC is not really what they claim it to be, heading hold, and done nothing about it." The wording should have been: "Mr. Eulefeld of Captron has known for years that.."
I do not think PELLICLE intended to, and we certainly do not try to help the Chinese overrun the planet. That is why I wrote "it makes us said to have to use a Chinese autopilot" in our helidrones. If you are interested, here is a link to see what we do, and take my claim, that our drones are the best in the world with a huge grain of salt

Ridiculous Kaarlo.....

:-)))))))) Laughing Out Loud about your nice try to sort out Germans... that'S what you do all the time.
And just because we did not supply you for your military applications is not a reason to act like you do.

Guys, make up your minds as you like.
I am out of this discussion... saving time and nerves getting in a big distance to Mr. Kaarlo the Great again ;-)

Will this help me
I can currently fly circuits, figure 8, loops and rolls.

I sometimes get disorientated when things happen fast or I stuff up a maneuver. Will something like this help me?
