I just got my Wally motor earlier this week. I plan to spend the weekend collecting data on my current setup which is a Spectra G with a TRM 231, standard fan and 720's. I have a 4200 Nimh battery and the jewel and I'm running a Solid G with a BLS251 on the tail, a 4131 on the throttle (hightech went south on me) and 8717's on the control surfaces. I do not fly 3D (as long as you don't count the last 15 seconds of flight prior to impact)

I can't seem to get a handle on the setup and tuning of gas motors. In fact, it seems that the more I try the worse I get. Back in the day I ran a G23 for about 2 years without any issues. I then moved up from the Schluter gasser to the 1005 and added a muffler, glass blades instead of wood and better servos. I would either tune them to get a smooth run which would result in an excessively lean run, scoring the cylinder walls or the muffler would come loose and scoring would occur. I then went to the TRM 231 and ran it for almost 2 years with a Bison muffler and had no problems. I wrecked and on the rebuild, started tweaking it and trying to get it to run better; 3 motors (1 was a 231 upgraded to a 26)later here I am.

I'll take some pics and short videos of the current setup and then other than replacing bearings, anything broken and the very sloppy front tailrotor drive coupler, I will replace the motor, fan and shroud and then take some more pics and video.

I welcome any and all comments and / or requests for information. If it is something I can measure, capture or find I will share.

I will follow the instructions for motor break in from the manufacturer, but other than that I am all for making it better.

I live in Las Vegas so if anyone is passing through I would be willing to try and meet up with you so you can see it and check it out.

I thought you couldn't get a Wally Fan for the Spectra-G. Has Wally made one specially to fit his new motor?

We pre-paid for these engines a while ago and have been waiting quietly.

Fans
Excalibur, I bought a fan and shroud for my 1005 when they first came out. Wally was working with someone to make the shrouds and I think I got one of the first ones. I wrecked my 1005 shortly after that and instead of rebuilding it I got a Spectra G. I have been having engine problems and so I didn't install it (the fan) on my 260. There is a difference between the height of the the 1005 and the G's shroud, 1005 is about 3/8" taller, but the one I got is the same size as the G's so it will work on it.

CNCJunkie If I understood correctly, Wally does not have any fans or shrouds to go with the engines. I believe there is still an issue with the making of the fans. Wally said that he just (this last week) got in new milling equipment and I would hope that as soon as he gets it all set up production will start again.

This could be your down fall with burnt up engines. If you try to get every last ounce of power out of an engine there will come a day that it goes lean. Once it does the effects are lasting. It is better to stay back in the safe zone even though it may not be max power.

UHHHH
I am a little confused Ace. My statement indicates that I fully intend to follow the instructions from the manufacturer (read builder "Wally" of this motor in a effort to break it in correctly and make sure that it runs the best it can. The remainder of the comment indicates that if someone sees something or has input to the settings or config of the rest of the Heli I will consider it and make corrections / changes as needed.

Shroud
Here are some pictures of the new fan shroud.
The glossy one is the Wally made shroud and the other is a new MA standard Spectra G shroud.

This is a side view to show the height of the shroud.

It's too bad Wally couldn't get the guy who made your shroud to continue to make them. The fiberglass looks really good.

My style of flying exactly !!!
Can someone PM me a link to Wally stuff. I would love a better fan/shroud for my Spec G 231. I would keep checking to see if "Wally" has t6he new fan/shroud.
Thanks

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

lejon, I understand Wally doesn't have the fans and shrouds now. I'm just saying that he put them aside for the people who pre-paid early on for the engine. My engine came to me with both parts installed.

Motor mounted on base plate
I got the fan installed and the motor mounted to the extra base plate. I also took some pics of the plug I have in the other motor after a run at 10500 rpm and the temp was 75F outside, the fins were at 255F.

Couldn't get the video to upload.

1. Old plug (had a hard time focusing in close enough to get a good shot.

2. A few shot of the new motor.

Did it come with the venturi on the carb or did you install that yourself?

Coil
Excalibur The one that is on there is the one it came with. My other ones are red. I will have to ask Wally. Perhaps he will see this and chime in.

Jrockstuart The venturi came from Wally so that I could see what type I needed to get. They have them at Dave's. I also ordered the Air Cleaner to go with it.

I have been told that the MA filter will work with minor adjustments.

Last night I took the engine out of the G and noticed that the uni-ball in the clutch assembly was loose. My other one is tight on the start shaft. I will be replacing it before it goes back together. I thought in the 1005 the ball was loose. If it is tight in the G then I must have had a lot of vibration going on.

Ready to go
I got her put back together.
Had to change out:
1. The clutch assembly the uniball was wore and had come off the shaft. It was too loose to epoxy back on and I didn't want to wait for a replacement order so I cannibalized from myother G. I will check the runout and either order a ball, the ball and start shaft or the entire assembly ($100).
2. The front tail drive coupler had what I felt was a lot of play. It seemed that the combined slop gave about 35 degrees of rotation at the tail. It now has less than 5 degrees of play.
3. I noticed one of the set screws for the front tail drove gear was loose, the other one was still tight against the flat spot on the shaft. I took it all apart cleaned it and then reassembled it with blue loctite.
Went over everything got it all back together and will start it for the first time tomorrow. I'll be running it on regular gas with 4 oz of Mercruiser Quick silver(non-synthetic). I have the GV-1 set for 10,500 rpm on the motor which is about 1470 head speed.

Only difference is that when I collected data with the old engine the ambient temps were in the high 70's today we are looking at a high of 52 and it is currently 46 outside.
