I know this is a heli forum and believe me I'm all the way heli, but I have a airplane related question for anyone that might be able to help. I just got done destroying the new phase 3 "Squall" ducted fan jet. All the electronics are still good but the foam replacements are not readely available. I want to take the rec., servos, and hopefully esc. out and pop them in a stryker. I will be putting the 6 series E-Flite motor in the stryker. My question is, will the 40 amp esc. that I have be enough to run the motor safely and efficiently. I contacted a hobby shop in town and asked this question and could tell the guy knew what he was talking about but just wanted to make a sale. He says that the castle creations 54 amp esc. is the only thing that will work. I'm just curious if I can get away with using the 40 amp but don't want to burn something up just being curious. All replies are very much appreciated!!

Thanks!

LOL, I destroyed my F-20 ducted fan this weekend. Must be a trend.

Six series motor specs:

* Type:6-pole inrunner
* Size:400/480 upgrade
* Bearings or Bushings:Ball bearings
* Recommended Prop Range:5x4 to 6x5.5 direct drive or 10x6 to 12x6 with 2:1 to 3:1 gearbox
* Voltage:7.2–12
* RPM/Volt (Kv):2700
* Resistance (Ri):.03 ohms
* Idle Current (Io):2.05A @ 10V
* Continuous Current:34A
* Maximum Burst Current:42A (15 sec)

* Cells:6–10 Ni-MH/Ni-Cd or 2–3S Li-Po
* Speed Control:35–45A brushless
* Weight:80 g (2.9 oz)
* Overall Diameter:28mm (1.10 in)
* Shaft Diameter:3.17mm (1/8 in)
* Overall Length:36mm (1.40 in)

Prop selection can play havoc with your final numbers for thrust and associated amperage, and will also determine the discharge continuous C rating of your battery pack. The wrong prop choice can make or break your electric flyer.

But, to your question.

The motor seems to be rated for a 2-3S LiPo pack. The maximum continuous operating current is 34 amps, and it will handle a 15 second 42 amp burst before things start to emit smoke.

The Castle Creations Phoenix 35 (or any 35A ESC) would most likely work, but if pushed to those numeric limits, would be marginal. You would be wise to run this motor using AT LEAST a 45 amp ESC. The Castle Creations Phoenix 45 would work just fine, as would ANY 45 amp or greater brushless ESC.

-----

Note that the motor specs even give you a 35-45 amp ESC range for useful speed controls. It's inaccurate to say that ONLY the CC Phoenix 45 would work with this motor.

thank you for your very detailed answer! I very much appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me. Wish there were more guys like yourself on the forums (I would imagine your a guy). That is exactly the sort of reply I was hoping for.

Thanks again!

Try one of those threads. The guys there seem to know what their talking about. I've been PMing some of them for a while now trying to get my Stryker set up.

Anyways, good luck and have fun!!

I might not be able to fly well, but I can crash with the best of them.
