How long do Tx Ni-Cd last?
Hi,
I have a Futaba T8UAF that has been sitting in my basement untouched for 4 years and just cycled the battery and I am getting over well over an hour of time on it (11.2v-9.6v).

My local hobby shop told me to get rid of it, but it seems like its working fine and I wouldn't mind saving $40 bucks.

What do you guys think?

2yrs is just about tops for a Nicad. Yes its going to work, for a short while anyway..

Keep a close eye on your charge times vs run times.

Taken care of, YEARS (more than 2).

Use a battery cycler to determine if the battery pack is good.

Charge it, use the battery cycler to monitor the pack as the cycler discharges.

If your battery pack is a 1500 mah pack, the cycler should report AT LEAST 1500 mah during the discharge cycle. Run the battery through about three cycles to see if it improves its capacity, if it drops off, or stays the same.

If you can solder and have the tools, you can build your own NiMh battery pack, using Kodak PRECHARGED NiMh cells. I get mine from Wal Mart, a 4-pack will set you back about $12. The PRECHARGED cells are equivalent to Sanyo's Eneloop cells, and retain up to 85% of their charge after sitting in the shelf for a year.

The cells are 2000 mah AA cells, drop right into your battery section of the radio.

My 8U batteries lasted 5 years until the radio broke. I always used the wall wart that came with them. Accidentally leaving the radio turned on is how they got cycled!Tom

Well , given that you should be able to get at least 500 cycles out of a nicad pack , assuming that it is trickle charged and not abused , that works out at about two cycles a week for five years .At the end of the day , it gets dark .

I'm not doubting your arithmetic, but did you account for the times the airfield closes for soccer?
