YS 50 broken connecting rod
I had my connecting rod break just below the waist pin to the piston. I was leaning out the engine and it was making good power for me. I got about 3 flight on it at this setting before it broke. I was use the g-force HE fan on my TREX 600. I was testing the temperature of the back plate when I was leaning it. I could hold my finger there for 3 - 4 seconds. I was using WildCat 30% helimix fuel. The engine's piston looked clean with a little brown near the edges. The piston is locked into the sleeve. I think metal from the connecting rod did it. The motor has about 10 gallons thru it.
What did I do wrong?

could be over-revving, but mine broke too at about 2-3 gallons and it wasn't lean.

YS replaced it w/out ANY issues. If it was an OS you would have gotten NO warranty and had to pay shipping and tear down fee to learn that they found a micron of rust somewhere and it's all your fault.

I have to say i agree 100% with you there. Its not like a YS to break a rod or an OS either but YS do stick to their warranty claims.
If it doesnt move and its meant too... use WD 40. If it moves and its not meant too...use duct tape!

Mine broke too through no fault of my own.If you can't learn to do it well, learn to enjoy doing it badly.

A broken connecting rod means over rev-ing. My head speed head was less then 2100 rpms. I don't run a governor and it never sounded like it was over rev-ing. May be I need a governor or rev limiter.

I'm at sea level and running 30%. Does the YS 50 come setup for 30% or should I shim the head?

What did it sound like before it broke. I am flying my 50 st now and its starting to make noise at idle. It doesn't sound like bearings but I'm not sure. TomI made a mistake once, but I was wrong?

If it's making noise at idle, it's probably a bearing. A con-rod won't make any strange noises. It just breaks.Hell... I can fix that.
Uh oh..
Nope.
It's ***ked!!!

WOW, I thought I was the only one that has had this happen for no reason. Mine was running perfect, around 1800 rpm on a gov, and coming out of a sweeping turn, dead...

I bought it second hand, so no warranty , but still shocked it let go..and was almost cold to touch when it landed
