Taking my 500E to the next level! Dalton pushed me over the edge......Video Added!
.......After a lot of flying, a bunch of events and talking and hanging out with a lot of scale guys.......I've finally decided to transform my Sport Scale 500E to the real deal!

The event at Dalton Georgia last weekend pushed me over the edge. Had a chance to talk with Emile and look at his heli's. Flying with him in loose formation and seeing the photos pushed me over the edge. Here's the picture that did me in, that 5 bladed rotor head looks sooooooo good!

Plans include:

Swapping over to a 5 Blade head and flying it quite a bit to get it dialed in.
Reworking the Century landing gear to get the proper stance.
Building a cockpit.
Rivet detail.
Adding the fins on the stabilizer.
Reshaping the rotor housing. (Doghouse)
Other details. Antennas, etc.....
Proper decals.

It the mean time I'll be asking for help and practicing flying the proper flight schedule as required.

Here's a few shots to show where my heli stands now:

Here's my scale subject:

First step is under way, ordered the new 50 size Century 5 bladed head, swash plate and swash driver. Also have a couple more sets of SWE CF 550 mm blades on the way. I have 2 more sets here already, so I should be able to get a set of 5 that weigh close enough to finish balancing. I'll go ahead and start getting the 5 blade set matched as early as this weekend.Mr. Haney

I will be getting a 50 size Century 500 soon.
How will you re-do the landing gear to get the right stance?

The way I see it, I have 3 choices on the landing gear.

1. Trim the steps off the stock rear legs and add light covers to the stock skids. They are a little shorter than the real ones "look", but other wise are OK

2. Fabricate new skids and legs from aluminum.

3. Convert a set of Thunder Tiger MD500 landing gear to fit.

ooops!!! i didnt mean to cause any trouble
okay maybe i did
i made my gear from brakeline tubing. there are pics in my gallery on the how i did it.
your choice of paintjob is pretty tough man, all that masking!!!!
kiding, the red will look great as it already does on your machine, i have always liked the full bright yellow as well.
it sure was fun doing all that flying around with yours, til mine decided it was getting a bit hot. the 5 bladed head does make some nice still shots withthe blades frozen too. well worth it. if you got any questions you know where to reach me.

Emile, Time to do that electric conversion......

It'll be good to see how my electric set up does compared to the Nitro.

Started tonight getting my lightest blade up to the needed weight.
Just walked out and picked up the blade from where it was drying, weight is spot on for the moment! Amazing what you can do with some Krylon Ultra Flat Black.

Today's update:

All blades are at 113 grams now. Found the heaviest blade for a master blade, and balanced the remainder of the blades to it, using a blade balance. Tomorrow I'll paint the tips of the blades (About and inch) the same red as the helicopter is painted.

HAH! Hey that's my FBO at Hooks airport (Helicopter Services) When did you take this pic? I haven't seen that 500 around before and i would definitely remember a call number like triple 8, Echo, Victor. Cool to see a pic suddenly of a place you visit so often. Looking forward to your build/upgrade of your 500! Good luck

Cheers,
Clint

Cool, I actually found a group of pictures on the internet. http://www.airliners.net/

A search the other night shows that the heli is now for sale. On the "For Sale" photos I've seen (Not very good ones) it looks like they've removed the large white N numbers.

The head made it in today. It does indeed fit loose on the Trex shaft. I placed .001 shim stock around the adapter and another piece around the main shaft, which tightened it up perfectly. One blade grip is too tight, so I'll need to check it tomorrow.

The retention bolt hole is 4 mm and the Trex shaft hole is 3 mm, anyone think that this will be anything to worry about?

I have a Gohbee metal head button that's 36 mm in diameter.....Perfect!

Yep, That's what I did this AM. Drilled easier than I thought it would.
Shortened the shaft a mm or 2 as well.

A quick update.....

Decided to remove the mechanics in order to give it a good doing over, they've been in there over a year and have been flown a bunch! Main gear needs replacing, worn a good bit.

Swash and head are fitted, used 44 mm rods and long ball links to make the head to swash linkages. Way too much pitch and cyclic in the current configuration, turned down swash % on the pitch to 23% which netted about 10 degrees of pitch. I'm going to put different arms on the servos so that the swash % can be bumped back up so the servo resolution is not decreased dramatically.

Good idea, I go over my scalers every year during the winter months. Regrease gear boxes, check gear lash, look over motor, clutch, head, and other moving/rotating parts. I think Emile does this too.

Sounds like you're making good progress on your "Scaling Up" of the heli. Keep at it.

One thing is for sure, upgrading a Trex to a 5 blade head is not a "bolt on" project! Right up my alley! Mr. Haney
