Learning hurricanes
Im getting close to my 3rd week trying these and I don't think im doing too bad.I can do them a little better than this but the 20 mph winds didn't help so I hope the winds calm down by the weekend.Ive busted my but on the sim the past 2 1/2 weeks and I can do them while switching the tail from front to back, maybe i'll try it in my next video haha .

Which sim, which heli? I have G4.5 and I have a hard time finding a heli that reacts like my 600n. Looks pretty good to me.

Im useing Realflight G3.5 and downloaded the Trex 600N from realflight .You need to play with the settings to get the sim to fly close to the real thing, try turning the head speed down.600LE,OS55,OS PowerBoost pipe,Align 610's,Spartan

Good job! I too, am trying to learn these little buggers. They are quite difficult. I saw some pros do fast backwards inverted hurricanes and it was the neatest thing I had seen. I started training on my sim in early August and think this will take me year at least. I can to them slow but I don't want to crash.
Keep plugging'

+1. And they look more impressive than 'funnels' IMO. One tip you guys might want to give a shot when switching from FF to reverse, is focus on transitioning from the focal point farthest away from you and back again as it flys by closest to you until you get familiar with the orientation. Some practice at that, you will be able to flip it around at any given time. I advise you to practice on the Sim until your comfortable with it before attempting it at the field or try it up high so you have enough air to bail out if things get ugly.

Good advice JetFire and well taken .Thats what im doing on the sim right now, switching the tail from front to back.I can do it really good on the sim but its a BIG step doing it in real life but I think im giving it a shot tomorrow as long as the wind is calm.Went out today with 5-10 mph winds and did very good so I think im ready .600LE,OS55,OS PowerBoost pipe,Align 610's,Spartan

Just stay up high and then if you mess up you will have plenty of room to think and get out of it.....

FlyingHigh,

Another thing to keep in mind that I’ve observed when I was learning them is to also focus on finding your groove. As you probably know, the maneuver is somewhat based on momentum to keep altitude. Its imperative that you keep your momentum otherwise things will get ugly real quick and you might find yourself bopping and all over the place. With that said, find a comfortable speed in FF to where your heli feels locked in and riding on rails before attempting to flip it around. When I first learned them, I also noticed that it helps to crank up your expo so its not so sensitive around center to avoid over correction jitters. You’ll feel the flight characteristic differences from the SIM but its no big deal and easy to adapt too because your SIM instincts will kick in naturally.

Hope that helped

That helped alot and thank you so much ..I did 4 full passes at once on my last 4 flights flipping the tail half way through each pass, still gotta get used to them cause my hands start shaking around the 3rd pass haha. This is maybe one of the hardest moves ive tryed and it looks so freaking sweet. There not the best looking but not sloppy as hell,i'll get a video up soon .Thanks again sir .

BTW,I put 15% expo in the tail and cyclics which was a huge help on controlling them .

I run only two RPMs. Normal and identicle RPMs for idle-1 and idle-2. What I did, is run a reasonable amount of expo for circuit flying on idle-2 and just the opposite on idle-1 for all out 3D. In other words.. your expo changes with a flick of a switch so your not locked in on one setting the whole entire flight. Something you might want to try.. if you haven't already.

The way I do them is find the sweet spot in the negative collective. Then use your aileron to control altitude. ie if you want it to go lower increase the bank angle and higher vice versa. My left stick barely moves once I'm stabalized into it. Also elevator controls the diameter of the circle. more elevator = tighter circles.

I use elevator and aileron to correct for heavy winds. I level the helicopter a bit on the upwind leg which will cause me to feed in more negative collective.

Good luck, You'll get them down to a "T" soon.

Good flying! I would like to point out one thing that helped me learn hurricanes is that it is not a slow manuevor, you need to keep up air speed so that it looks like a true hurricane if you go slower the angle of your helicopter changes and there for looks like a funnel. It all takes practice but your doing really good.

Thanks guys .

grimthenoble,

I can do them fast going backwards but trying to keep them slow while switching the tail.Once im comfortable switching the tail back and forth i'll get some speed going.Ive been doing ALOT of inverted forward flight the past 2-3 weeks so I feel im ready to do them fast but im not 100% comfortable yet.

JetFire,
I have to admit that Stunt1 Stunt2 alternating Expo really worked out well for me. A little expo gave a lot of security on my hurricanes.
I'm going to be busy now trying to perfect my skills in the next few weeks.
thanks again
