Denatured alcohol
What is everybodys thoughts on using denatured alcohol to clean your nitro machine? I currently use windex and it's just not cutting it!! I have heard good things about denatured alcohol but I also know it's pretty potent.

I have been using a mix of windex and regular old rubbing alc. and it work really well. Not hard on the heli, so far at least, and gets everything off. I tried to denatured and I dont know if I like it. It doesnt dry nearly fast enough for me. I do know several that use denatured alc. and love it.Procrastinators of the world unite ... tomorrow.

I use it but I also immediately blow it off with an air compressor. Squirt bottle in one hand and the compressor in the other.

I don't know if I would be comfortable just letting it sit on the heli. I also try to stay away from the electronics.

Where would be the cheapest place to order small amount of denatured alcohol? I can only find it in large volume @ over $50.

You can usually get a pint at a local drug store. Sometimes they look at you funny when you ask for it -- maybe cuz crackheads use it to light their pipes with or something. If you look okay they'll sell it to you without question.

You can get it at most any hardware store.
I'm new to nitro and was under the impression this is THE stuff to use to clean your bird. I also understand that rubbing alchohol is just watered down denatured alcholol, don't know for sure but it is what i thought. Ditto on the denatured not drying fast enough so I'm staying tuned to find a improved version of using straight up denatured.

I picked up a gallon at home depot for $12.00 but i am not sure if I want to use it.

The reason for the question is that I saw an article in RC Heli saying that you can squirt it over everything (except the canopy) and let it drip all the gunk off. Then take a rag and wipe it down and it is good as new. I don't know if I feel comfortable dousing my new bird with essentially a type of fuel!! I might go with the rubbing alcohol mixture. It sounds a bit safer!!

If de natured alchohol, is what we Brits call Methylated spirits, then use it on your heli and don't worry about it. I have yet to find a reaction on any surface it has been poured on. I use it all the time to clean up my heli/planks/cars/boats/steam engines/trail stoves/blow torches, and to de grease prior to using thread lock etc.
I have yet to have a problem directly related to using it, and it cleans up fuel residue like a charm.

We used to be able to get Methylated spirit in in its unadulterated form i.e clear liquid, but the down and outs/wino's started drinking it as a cheap replacement for whisky etc, now it has a purple dye in it to make it look and taste awful.
Good luck

I use denatured alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. Rubbing alcohol most of the time as it is cheaper. But, denatured alcohol works on everything.
Spray a rag and wipe down your bird, instead of drenching your bird and wiping it down.

Can't say about the rest but I do drench my canopy when I use it. The paint is still on so I guess its OK to use on the canopy.

POISON! DANGER! VAPOR HARMFUL. MAY BE FATAL OR CAUSE BLINDNESS IF SWALLOWED. CANNOT BE MADE NONPOISONOUS. HARMFUL IF INHALED OR ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN. FLAMMABLE LIQUID AND VAPOR. AFFECTS CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. CAUSES IRRITATION TO SKIN, EYES AND RESPIRATORY TRACT. MAY AFFECT LIVER, BLOOD, KIDNEYS, GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT AND REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM.
This was enough for me to stick with rubbing alcohol!

*That pesky methane in nitro fuel isn't pretty either. Gotta love electrics.

That stuff sounds more like Methanol than Methylated spirit. Either way Drinking it was never a good idea, Blindness and death are always a good excuse to sticking to beer.
I often wonder if the term "blind drunk" comes from consuming this type of beverage.
Good luck
