My babies birthdays are coming up next week!
On September 22nd, my 1005 will be 12 years old! Current flight count is 2133.

On September 21st, my Spectra will be 4 years old, current flight count sits at 795.

This month I've been working hard on the Spectra to bring the flight count to 800 by then, so the 1005 flight count increase has been lagging. Looks like I should make it with another day or 2 at the field

I was doing some maintenance on the Spectra last night, and changed out the tail rotor bearings and shaft as it seemed to develop too much slop over the flight usage. Its perfect now ready to go, just need to take it out but the weather today is cold and windy, not very inviting.

I'm gonna try to push for 800 and 2140 flights by their anniversaries

..I try to forget when and how much i spend on this hobby..

My helis are like Trigger's Broom (not that folk in the US are likely to know 'Fools and Horses'... Trigger was a road sweeper that got an award for looking after his broom for many, many years.. As he said.. Look after your broom and your broom will look after you. It's the same broom he had from day one... It's just had 12 new handles and 20 new heads.

..there's a few original screws on them...

On my 1005 I think the only thing that is original on it are some screws!

I have no idea if you are married, but if so, you had better not forget your anniversary or wife's birthday. Otherwise you have just given her enough ammo to cream you.The case against politicians simply is that when they legislate for all men, they always omit themselves

If I see one photo of you and your helis at a table with a birthday cake smeared on the canopy I am going to drive to MA and slap you.

The photo of you tucking them in and now this seriouslly Raja..

Denial is the first step...

Hmmm...
Can we get a big birthday cake with a picture of a Spectra and 1005 on it drawn from icing? Make it big enough so all can share in the festivities and I'll be glad to pitch in for the cake!!

I did fly the Spectra tonight 3 more flights to test out the new tail rotor shaft/bearings. I saw no benefit or change from this maintenance that I did last night, the tail after 3 flights still has some play in it guess I won't worry about it.

Also found out I don't like F3C mode on the Gy611. Someone had suggested that for better tail holding, but I realized tonight #1 it doesn't pirouette at a steady pace with F3C, and #2 the tail is more "touchy" with F3C, sort of whips around quicker and some of that due to airflow. I switched it back to 3D mode and its much much better, smooth just the way I like it. Just an FYI in case you guys have wondered about the differences in these modes.

Ivan I'll try to give you a call tonight. I gotta spend alot of time soldering so its a good time to chat!

Have you had a chance to compare the maount of free play with the gasser friendly open box version? I've also got (guessing) about 2-3 degs of rotation on the tail blades without any gear engagment through the tail train. Significantly more play on preddie (I keep taking that apart to find the reason) and significantly less play on my 600N..

Raja, we can get a cake with your heli pictures on it. Our local grocery store I think does that with the icing. Not cheap though. One mile of road will take you one mile. One mile of runway will take you anywhere in the world.

I think you'e going about this the wrong way. Get each part made in marzipan and assemble using hard icing bolts...blades out of rice-paper covered macaroon...and an angelica flybar..and it's just got to be a huge brandysnap for the boom...

..I can taste it already..

What percentage treacle in the sugar syrup fuel?

Play
I was talking about play in the tail rotor shaft Peter. Like if you hold the tail blade grips stiff in your hands you can rock the tail output shaft left and right. I thought new bearings and a shaft would take out that rock, but its still there, maybe a little less but there nevertheless.

As far as spinning the tail rotor and that play/rock before the gear enguages that is caused mainly by the delrin coupler wearing. However, and this is important, if you fill the coupler hole with lithium grease before you insert the torque tube into it, the wear is greatly reduced, so its a well worth it addendum to the build.

So make sure you guys out there flying the spectra or 1005 to grease the couplers on both ends. If you haven't done it take the tail apart and do it.

That was also more-or-less what i was talking about ..except that (specially with preddie) you can lock the front tail gear and asses the play on just the back end. To avoid having the play of the crown gear mesh involved

No no no
Sorry I wasn't clear Peter, I meant rock in the shaft itself on the bearings that it rides on, not rock in the tail rotor as you spin the shaft. The 1st paragraph in my previous post talks about this, the 2nd paragraph on is about what you're talking about, slop in the gears/transmission link to the tail rotor.

Two different things...

Sitting pretty at 800!
Well this evening I put in 2 more flights on the Spectra and managed the 800 flights 4 days early! Worked on backwards autos with U turns back to the field and some of the inverted autos with push to tail slide backwards landing. Need more practice but I'm feeling more confident with last minute commands to stick the landing

Also got 4 flights on the 1005 working that one up some more before Tuesday On that I practiced backwards inverted flight ovals so fly backwards inverted then pull up to a 1/2 loop and continue backwards upright in the other direction. Sounds easy to do but I'm not smooth and its not fluid yet. Also my lines are not parallel, in other words I come out on a diagonal sometimes. Will work on that some more...
