a big thumbs up to the horizon service center and a big thumbs down to the hobbico service center
Awhile back, I sent 2 ar7000 receivers in that had the antenna's pulled loose from the boards. Yes, very much my fault, I sent them into the service center 2 weeks ago, did not put a card number on the service form and instead put "please call with total before repairing" (I did this because of my experience with futaba, which i will get to in a minute). I have never heard a word from horizon since sending them in. Today, I received by fedex, 2 brand new in package ar7000's with a note on the invoice that said "Replaced for free in the name of good customer service". Is that not one of the coolest things?

2nd part

Awhile back as well, I sent in a gy502 gyro to the futaba service center because it reset itself to the factory defaults twice in the air (that sucks by the way). 2 weeks later, i get a bill for $50 and change in an email for the following.

1. replaced top half of gyro case (wasn't aware of an issue with it)
2. replaced label on gyro sensor because of wear (who gives a crap if its worn)
3. Tested and reset to factory defaults

Now, I never knew of an issue with the amp case, or a worn label (and don't really care). Reset to factory defaults? the sob did that twice by itself, why would i need it done again?

I called and talked with 3 people and asked why this would happen, all 3 gave me I don't know's and it works fine now. I have zero confidence in this gyro now and will not use it because of the what ifs.

Horizon, JR and Spektrum will have all of my future electronics business based on my recent experiences with horizon and hobbico.

anybody wanna buy a 502 gyro

sending me 2 brand new receivers free (no shipping charges either) was above and beyond, I fully expected to pay for repairs and receive my old units back (which would have been fine with me). My hat is definately off to horizon and my back is turned to futaba (no need for futaba gyros anymore anyways, i'm going vbar on everything)Vibe 50 (V Bar) Protos 500 (Vbar) Trex 700 (Vbar)

I have never had a problem with Horizon service taking care of a problem I've had with a product or billing. But I have sent emails asking questions about products that never get answered.

Hobbico was a bit of a pain, but my problem was taken care of.

I agree %100

Hobby services just refused warranty repair on a 4 month old hyper with 50 flights because "the warranty does not cover corrosion". They offered to repair it at a reduced cost of $100.

A week later Horizon replaced my 770 gyro without even a question. I was still waiting for a call to see what was wrong with it, and a new one shows up.

This is the whole reason that I fly JR/Spektrum radio only. (with the exception of the BLS251 because it is just flat out better then the 8900G)

I recently sent in my 8900G (worn out after 200 flights) and a AR7000 that just needed an update and they sent me a new Rx and 8900G. Got to love JR.

horizon has beyond great service as far as i'm concerned. in '08, We had a model airshow at the military airshow, I contacted both team futaba and team jr about the possibility of sending a team pilot to put on a show. Futaba said they might, but the club would have to cover all costs, airfare, hotels and food. Horizon on the other hand was all over it, they sent 3 team jr pilots, a huge amount of promo material (hats, shirts, etc), donated a rtf trainer along with a dx7 for the club to have as a club trainer and also donated a 1/4 scale piper cub for a club raffle all at no cost to the club (we offered to help pay as much as we could out of the club fund, but they wouldn't have any part of it).

After this last straw with futaba, I am 100% JR, horizon and spektrum, tower and hobbico have lost a half a dozen customers (friends of mine here that i've vented to)because of this gyro deal. (I would have gladly paid for a replacement board or sensor or whatever, but i'll be damned if i'm going to pay $50 to replace a case half, a sensor label and to reset the gyro to factory defaults (which is why i sent it in, in the first place, it reset itself twice to the factory defaults, I really did not need for them to make it 3)

Futaba has replaced two crashed 5014 and one 6014 receivers for me for the price of shipping ($12) and they are always available when I need phone support. Not to mention they let you buy parts like just the antenna ($8) or case ($14) instead of having to buy an entirely new product. Also, I scratched the screen cover glass on my 12Z and they sent me TWO replacements for like $30, plus the adhesive and instructions on how to replace. I can't knock Futaba, I really enjoy their products and service. Not to mention I've never had anything fail (that I haven't crashed first).

I sent in my 9452 that quit working when less than a year old, never crashed, and I was told that it was fuel damage and therefore not covered under warranty. They offered to do me the great favor of replacing it for $60 (same price I paid for it new).

Since this servo is not specified for electrics only, I think if it had fuel inside, this was a design or manufacturing defect. Fuel damage was just a way to weasel out of the warranty.

When my second 9452 went bad last week, I decided not to give any more of my repair money to Futaba and replaced all 3 with DS610s. Time will tell if that was a good choice or not, but I at least made my statement.

If the servo was contaminanted with fuel residue, then that is not a warranty claim. Just because Futaba (or JR for that matter with their similar products) does not specify this servo for electrics only does NOT imply that its acceptable to let it get full of fuel residue. Indeed, I would like to see an ad from ANY mfg that states their servo is "fuel proof".

Honestly, if you've had 66% of your primary control servos fail on a model, I would be looking closely at what circumstances exist in that model that may be causing such failures. Futaba makes one hell of a reliable servo. When they fail like that, there's almost always an underlying cause.

Ben, I had a BLS451 fail on me on my aileron channel, lost my aileron control and heli plowed in. Now the main gear has tooth off(? cause of lockup- 4 flights on heli and no prior crashes-0-or result of the crash???) and the top of the case where one of the gear pin/shafts sets is goobered. In any event that's the channel I lost control of as I wathed it plow in and I could only partially control elev/pitch as it got all squirrely with any attempted movement, later diagnosing bad servo and it made sense.

I can see them denying that warranty as DUE to the crash, NOT cause of the crash. Many parts problems could be due to different things. Sometimes it's hard to establish defect or abuse/crash etc...

I have a BLS251 that won't hold the tail on my Aurora. Less than 40 flights old. Never really worked great, but has gotten worse past 2 flights to wehre it will lose the tail for 3-5 seconds, and now that servo is pulled. Seems to work fine on the bench, but can't hold the tail in the air.

I can see them "testing" the servo and claiming it was fine, or replacing somethign that wasn't the problem and saying it's ok, only to have me potentially install and hence crash a heli due to a defective servo pot, controller, or motor.

Horizon and Airtronics/Global services have great service IMO. Hobby services will look for ANY reason to deny warranty work IMO. Sometimes they may have a legit reason. BUT I have absolutely NO DOUBT they are denying ALOT of valid/legit claims as well just to save $$$ Pretty short sighted IMO.

I would be interested to see if anyone of the above posters with positive experiences, had those experiences in the past 6 months??????

I actually hope they get their act together b/c I prefer Futaba servos, but I won't spend any more $ on futaba electronics after these 2 servos are bad, and I'm almost 100% positive the warranties will either be denied, or they will want to charge me as much as a new part costs to "repair them" which I will have serious trust issues with those parts then.

Re: Team Futaba and JR. I can't say anything good or bad about either. I can say that John Adams showed up to our local heli fun fly and when one guy crashed and stripped his 8900G gear set, he gave him a free 8900G servo. Guy had another mishap, not his fault and stripped the new 8900G, and John had a spare gear set with him, he gave him. NOW that is SERVICE my friends . Maybe team Futaba would have done the same, I hope they would have. I really believe in my tainted heart though that Hobbico would have charged my friend $100 just for crashing, and claiming that he needed a new flux capacitor for the Mr Fusion reactor. As you can tell I'm very very very bitter about Hobbyservices

personally I would like to know if the servo really was contaminated with fuel. I'll grant you that 2/3 servos failing DOES indeed seem logical that there was an issue like that. However, just b/c a servo has fuel residue on the Outside of the case, doesn't mean that fuel got INTO the servo, and I honestly believe that the tech's are coached to deny warranties if they see any fuel residue anywhere, rather than diagnose if it was indeed residue that gummed up the servo.

Yes, the fuel was inside the servo and yes, I am still trying to find out how the fuel is getting there.
