FAA grounded model aircraft today in Philly
I received a NOTAM TFR from the AMA web master today with this restriction.

TFR - 9/9379
Map View of the Affected Area

Does this really mean I can't fly heli's today in that area?
IT's what I do.

Did you notice the times? 7:15pm - 11:20pm

Sunset is 7:09pm so unless you were night flying I doubt it would impact you...

2:15 pm ~ 6:20 pm in Philly.

A worthy alternative to flying tomorrow could be to bounce repeatedly back and forth between Geno's and Pat Olivieri's for dueling cheesesteaks.

And while you're there, I'll have one wit', wit'.

You would think they would at least tell him in his local time

That is his first excuss for being out there flying

I wonder why they are imposing this??

I have never heard of or seen this before. Anyone else get one of these?

TFRs have always been applicable to model aircraft operations, it's just that there has been a serious lack of communication. The AMA is now on board and is sending out notices to affected clubs and members.

Our club here gets notices from AMA and they send out the notice to all club members via email.

TFRs are also available from a number of online resources in the form of NOTAMS if you go looking yourself.

Me, I don't bother checking Notams before I go fly RC...

You would think if the FAA was interested in restricting what are typically CIVILIAN activities, they would at least attempt to display a map that shows SOME LEVEL OF DETAIL useable by the average person.

Except for full-scale flight activitiies, The map they show is useless unless you are well within the circle shown, as no decent landmarks (roads, towns, etc.) are displayed. This might be a useful notice for full scale aircraft operations, but it's useless as a notice for RC operations.

If you break the the rules imposed by the FAA you could be fined, lose your helicopter and get prison time. When you break the FAA rules and regulations, your breaking Fedral Law. I for one would not want to be the one they use to set an example of!

your kidding right?

do you think every person in that area who flies model aircraft constantly monitors websites seeing if they are allowed to fly on a certain day?

is news and radio time spent warning everyone?

the worst that can happen is you fly your heli, and a cop comes by to tell you to shut it down. and i dont even find that likely.

someone would have to go to each model club and at the very least make phone calls and put up postings.

Wow - they're very specific:
C. The following operations are not authorized within this TFR: flight training, practice instrument approaches, aerobatic flight, glider operations, parachute operations, ultralight, hang gliding, balloon operations, agriculture/crop dusting, animal population control flight operations, banner towing operations, model aircraft operations, model rocketry, and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
How would the operators of all of these types of aircraft know to check NOTAMs? I had no idea that we needed to check them.
