"Does it look crystallized?"

Yes, as though it had work-hardened and crystallized.

I had a friend with a 700n have a similar thing happen, except it broke the head block. As someone mentioned earlier one of the links going to the grips let go causing one blade to go full opposite the other blade basically ripping the head off the main shaft. I would guess this is what happened to you're heli except on the 450 the weak link is the main shaft. Just a guess you may never know for sure. Good luck getting it back together it is a great flying little heli.

Got it back together and flew a couple batteries through it this evening - very nice flying little heli! Much more locked in than the 450SE V2 that I had. Hope the issue I had was just an isolated incident, this looks to be a fun heli.

Thanks for all the replies.

That washer is laser welded to the shaft, but my guess is he never heard of soft start. Yea Yea Yea, hovering, but no soft start will stress things if you're not carefull. BewareIgnorance is the absence of facts.Stupid is lacking the intellectual capacity to comprehend the fact

Its really amazing to me how many people like to get on Runryder and pick at people. I never claimed that I wanted retribution for my problem, simply that I was unhappy and wanted to know if anyone else had experienced this - yet some allude that I might "be suppressing" information.
There's some detail being overlooked or being suppressed.
Others say
but my guess is he never heard of soft start. Yea Yea Yea, hovering, but no soft start will stress thing
when they have no idea how things were operated. And for the record, yes, soft start was enabled and used as this is the default setting for the Align ESC that comes with the super combo.

Unbelievable.....

It looks like it is made out of powdered metal.. I don't have a 450 pro, I still have my V-2, but by the looks of that picture the new shafts must be made of powdered metal.. This material is very rigid (it wont bend easily) but it is very brittle as far as metal goes. Just the right kind of sharp force would cause it to break clean or shatter. Has anyone noticed if these shafts are less likely to bend vs. the V2?

How was your tracking? its possible if you had a bad tracking that it would vibrate so much that would cause your mains shaft to break.

Your shaft had a pre-existing micro crack that could have come anywhere from the initial casting of the rod to the machining operations. The heat treating is what gives the differing granular patterns. The sharper/cleaner looking granular stucture is where the metal fractured in your application. The dull-looking grains are the result of the crack being there prior to heat treat. All it takes is one speck of an inclusion in the metal and you will get a crack.

Sure looks like a manufacturing product defect to me. I could be much more specific given the opportunity to examine the fracture faces under a microscope.

For the record, I spend 33 years as a refractory/ceramic engineer specializing in metallurgical applications and failure analysis. I have multiple patents in the field of refractory ceramics. I was a long standing member of the American Foundrymen's Society, National Chairman of the Melting Methods and Materials Division of the AFS as well as a member of the AFS Executive Committee. I also guest-instructed at the AFS Cast Metals Institute in Des Plains IL as well as for various Iron & Steel Society seminars.

I guess, in short, I'm saying you got a bum part and somebody owes you.
