The BBC prototype was flying well. I was doing a tic tock and the ship started to make an awful sound.
Set her down and now It's bench time.
This ship has seen over 40 hours of flight time without a crash.
I'm Thinking that the main bearings or tail bearings are singing for some service. Belt tension looked ok.
Any other ideas?

You know Bill, been flying for 20 years, and I can truly say I can't remember a bearing actually going out on me. I keep hearing talk about it,but it's another "yet" for me. Got a lot of time in the air too. I'll be interested to know what you find.

My BBC was flying GREAT last weekend, even after the auto into weeds. I love how low the RPM's are at 1900 with the gear mod. It's pretty strange to hear. Sounds like it is running too slow, but it's not. Incredible power with that 70. Love it!!

How can I soar with the Eagles when I work with turkeys??

Hmmm. I figure it could be a number of things. Bearing turning in the block, burt bearing, clutch shoe worn out. You got me.

I got all set up here at the Worlds. Shooo finally! Although I am a little peaved to find out that they have been taking reservations for about two weeks. AMA has always been first come first serve when it comes to RV's. Anyway, I have a site either way but it looks like they may make me move a couple of times through the week. What a cluster f*c.

At least I'm here. But realy if they were going to make a policy change they could have sent it out to all the registerd pilots? E mails cost nothing.

I sold another one to Terrafirma...... wife wants to know where the money's at!!!!

Thanks for the input. I have a P-51 on the bench. Should see the Pantera on the bench in few days to noodle the "singing sound".
Your ideas will give me something to look at. Heck our club meeting is this week and I might just have to hover the sucker to see if the singing comes back! I have never had this noise before. Now that JB is back from is fun and vacation. His input would we welcome.
let ya know gang.
Kjarman, on your AMA stuff. Be thankfull that you can travel to an event. Our folks in the Pacific Northwest just can't make the travel.

I had a vigor long ago that make a squeal sound and it turned out to be the fan hub was semi-loose on the crank. Just a thought.

Just did pulled the engine from the BBC.
Sam. So far your still on the mark.
I turned 3/4 of a turn on the crank nut. Along the way I tightened the head bolts 1/4 turn.
Cleaned the clutch and all is good.
We will see if this is the fix Sunday.
If not. A great service was needed.
Thanks Sam.

Pinion spinning inside the pinion bearing will squeal. I've heard that one many a time. Not sure about a squal though.

If the pinion came loose from the bearing, there's an alternative method for attachment that will not.

While we've not had problems with the AUD3077 bearing coming loose when using Loktite Bearing and Stud adhesive (for securing the bearing to the Raptor 90 pinion), some have, and Jay's method works great! It shows solid and meticulous effort on his part. Granted, it's a little more trouble, and the bearing is 5 mm wide instead of 7 mm wide, but overall, it also results in a better way to get the job done. Despite 300+ flights without issue (the bird in the video with the YS91SR) I agree this is really a better way to do the job. Ultimately, if mine comes loose, I likely will apply this method. Good job Jay.

I think this just boils down to the fit between the bearing and pinion. Fit is VERY tight with the Audacity pinion, not so in my instance with the Raptor pinion. That's why I decided to use the method that pinion was designed with. Someone once told me "you only have to be smarter than what you're working on" LOL!

The noise went away. Thanks for all of your help. It was the nut on the crankshaft. I figure after 10+ hours of flying she was telling me that some service was needed. I think this thread is done.

The gear mod? is that the Raptor pinion and maingear that someone posted a while back? If YES, can you redirect us to that thread. I'd like to review that again.

Stock gear set on this one. Never did the rappy gear set.
Now it's time to try the rappy mod with the bbc.
I would call it the Pantera hybrid mod.
