Funny you should mention it, Just out of curiosity the other day I went back to have a look at my very first posts 2 years back I think.
I think the first one was written by my dad who made one or two posts asking some questions about a noisy clutch in a RJX Hurrican 50 just shortly before he passsed away.

So basicly Ive been an imposter makeing posts under someone elses account for the last 2 years or so!

Thats why my screen name is spitfire even though ive never flown a plank in my life, bit too sentimental to change it to something else now but.

Alot of the crap I wrote those earlier posts make me cringe and I wish I could take em back now..

i remember you saying something about your name when i first got on rr, spitfire. i remember your story about your dad. i wish i could take back a few stupid questions when i first started. same questions brand new pilots ask on rr now that i roll my eyes at sometimes. i always have to remember it's only been a year since i was asking the same things. the best thing i've learned on rr is how to search before i post. i once asked for someone to basically program my radio for me in a post. like all helis that size should be setup identical right? give me your setup.fly it like you stole it

just wanted to keep this thread alive. i'd like for you all to post what skill level you are at after a year of flying. you always see guys asking how far along should i be at this point. lets get some posts here for comparison. after a year i am here:
doing well with, stall turns, controlled figure 8's, flips, loops, rolls, nose in side in fff. currently working on inverted hovering and backward flight. i fly for 4 or 5 hours one day on the weekends. 5 kids can account for my limited flight time. where are you guys at after a year?

Heres my progress videos, my 2nd day (April 24,2008) of real flying. Before this I was in a garage for 2 months on the sim and 1 month hovering.

Watch at YouTube

This one was on July 14,2008 and was my last time flying for 6 months cause I sold everything but I was getting a little better.

Watch at YouTube

After comming back in Jan and busting my azz this is where im at now

Watch at YouTube

I used to hit the sim hard 5-6 days a week,3 hrs or so a day.In the last month or so I found myself getting really sick of flying on the sim and not sure why ,seems like I only go on for a few mins before I go out now.

I think everyone seems to ask questions in the beginning that they will later see as silly. It's just part of the learning game. There's nothing easy about the heli hobby and to become some what proficient one has to take in vast amounts of information.
i once asked for someone to basically program my radio for me in a post. like all helis that size should be setup identical right? give me your setup.
A lot of beginners ask for radio programming and usually none of the veterans will answer the way the guy asking wants. I asked and never got the answer I was looking for. In the beginning I could never figure out why I never got my answer. The reason is simple...if you have to ask for basic throttle & pitch curves you have no business trying to fly the model alone. It tells a veteran answering you're in desperate need of help and you don't know what you're doing. AND..., a model in untrained hands can kill someone.

It's hard to benchmark individual progress in this hobby. We don't all fly as much as some, we learn at different rates, and the age of this heli group goes from 5 or 6 to 80 years of age.

Well ive been on my own with no local help what so ever.Everything ive learned was from asking for base Throttle/pitch curves from here and other sights and it helped alot.Ive learned you can get the same amount of info by asking questions here than in person,it just takes a little longer.I just got my AMA less than 2 weeks ago and joined a club.My first day I flew there felt like my first real flight cause I flew in front of 10 people for the first time,I thought my radio would fall apart cause I was shaking so bad .I didn't do half the stuff I know how to do cause I knew everyone was watching me and my nerves were shot lol.I had guys come up to me and say " calm down, your better than I am" and this is people that have 5+ years exp.Not saying im a pro flyer or anything, just saying you dont need local help to learn to fly and set your heli up cause there "is" the few cool guys here that are more than willing to help someone get into this awesome hobby. If I didn't get the help from people here and other sights theres a 90% chance I could have FK'ed myself up along time ago.Im all for someone getting local help but if someone is in the same shoes I was in,this sight is a awesome tool for getting the help you need, learning and making cool azz friends .
