Heli Exploded
Was out at the field the other day, 2nd flight on my Logo 600, was doing a tight turn (heli was sideways) and the tail gives out completely.

So, the heli flips upside down and starts spinning like crazy… I righted it, hit throttle hold and the heli literally explodes in midair and I'm picking up pieces across 100 x 100ft area.

It all happened in less than a second, but far as I can tell, looks like tail belt snapped, caught on something, and the abrupt stop of the main blades ripped the frame to pieces and ejected the canopy through the main blades.

Here's the result:

These pieces are not from the heli hitting the ground, but from the mid air explosion.

It really cheeses me off… had just finished going over heli the night before and among other things, checked the belt, tension was perfect and only had about 100 flights… but snapping like that for no apparent reason destroyed the whole heli.

Only good news is, save from a ripped throttle wire, it looks like all the electronics survived.

Wow, that sucks, I feel for you.

How many flights on the belt?
It looks to me like the belt bound up in the tail box, are there any marks on the tail pulley from the belt riding up the side of it ?
Are you running the new tensioner or the old tensioner ?

Inquiring minds want to know
I would prefer if my heli did not explode in mid air like that !

Regards,
Nathan

EXPLANATION for explosion
I can tell you exactly what happened because the same thing happened to me last year at IRCHA.

The Castle Creation service rep put their new BETA software in my HV85 esc and the software did not have the brake disabled. I hit throttle hold and the motor stopping literally ripped the frames apart, exactly like yours. I took it over to the Mikado tent and they immediately knew what to cause was. And true to Castle form, they denied that the brake being enabled was even possible, especially since the esc was a brand new replacement for 2 previous ones that did not make it through spool up.

Believe me when I tell you it is the only plausible explanation if the explosion happened when you hit throttle hold.

My friend MAYHEM had the belt wrap around the pulley and shaft but that would be a lot of luck to have it happen at the exact time you hit throttle hold. plus the belt is still in the boom and not tangled around the pulley.

^^^^Never even thought of that but you are right! No matter how fast the motor stops, the blades will continue to spin because of the oneway bearing. So the Mikado tent must have been wrong and the Castle tent was correct.Team MikadoUSA 480XXTreme, 550SX, 600SX, 700XXTreme, 800XXTreme!!

I think Furyous is right. Stopping one of these motors using ESC brake, I think, has a very good chance of torquing the frames to destruction. Anyway, Furyous, what was the actual status of the brake function on the ESC? Did they let you plug it in to check?

Yep, same thing here, mine resetted mid-air, airplane settings + brake enabled, castles response "impossible", a year later the admitted that static discharge could perhaps have done something to it...

To the original poster:

Did you have those new belt tensioner on the tail?
Any sign on the tail pulley it had been riding on the edge?
(that happened to my friend, and the belt didnt like that)

Yeah, it's a total re-kit. Wife wasn't too happy when I came home and told her I needed a new heli.

About the brake, I auto with the heli using throttle hold all the time, so the one way's working as it should... unless it locked up for some reason and the brake reset on the PJ... but I don't think that's what happened.

I'll take a look at the tail... but there was no sign it was riding up last I looked – belt was pretty tight. Was just using the tensioner that came in the kit… kit was under a year old… what's the difference with the new one?

New belt tensioner in the link.
With it, its impossible for the belt to jump off, more or less.

I have had issue with it jumping off with old pulley, so did friends, at TH and piro reversal (sudden change of load, big time), if your unlucky it gets totally off, on the side of the pulley and it snaps off, but if this was the case, you should see sign of it on the edge of the pulley.

I guess I've got the old one then… Anyway, just took another look at the tail and there's no sign of the belt riding up and it's still in place exactly where it should be, so I don't think that's what caused it to snap.

Believe me when I tell you, it is not the mainshaft one way that has anything to do with it. The torque of the motor going for 30,000 rpm to 0 instantly, is what ripped apart the frames. I wish I had a pic of the motor, which was twisted up like a pretzel.

The brake did it, I promise you. At least on mine that is. And the frames looked identical to yours in the pic.
