Yes, I have a close friend who mistakenly flew with a bls251 at 8.4V-0.7V =7.7V because he didn't knew that the step-down would only reduce 0.7V. He thought it would regulate the output regardless of voltage.

He burned the step-down diode 3 flights later. We don't know if this was result of the higher voltage and the bls251 current draw or just an unlucky coincidence but he stopped being an ass and now flies with 5.2V on the tail.
