Why do you need backlash in your tail rotor? Does lack of it cause mechanical wear or are there other factors at play that make backlash critical? |

Are you talking about gear spacing? Backlash is basically gear slop and is not necessary, but the gears do have to be properly spaced and as close as possible is not proper spacing. Too close and the gear teeth interfere with each other and bind, but too far away and you have slop/backlash.Wiki does say this though:
"Some backlash is required to allow for lubrication, manufacturing errors, deflection under load and differential expansion between the gears and the housing...Gear couplings use backlash to allow for angular misalignment..."So I guess if you don't have perfect alignment, then you don't want perfect gear meshing. |

Too tight and they bind and rob energy from the drive system and during autos.Too loose and you will chew them up.Andy AMA 77227 http://www.jaxrc.com |

would the piece of paper between the gears trick work for the tail ?? what heli and tail setup are we taking about.in most setups I would say yes the paper trick will work. in some of the new smaller torque tube tail drive systems that are hitting the market lately it might be too much slopCRASH! i was talking about tail drives in general, i always hear people saying that backlash is necessary, i guess what they are really trying to say is proper gear mesh is necessary and backlash is the final result. |

yes proper gear lash is very important and I agree that that is what they are referring too.I just set the backlash on my Spectra G and because the gears are housed inside a closed case it must be done by feel. on the open MA tail cases you can use the paper trick.on some of the new small tail drives like the trex 450 pro I'm not sure but if they are like there bigger brothers you have little to no adjustment available.CRASH!
