Three very different choices - but which one?
I managed to stuff my Raptor for the third and final time about four weeks ago - pilot error all the way as I didn't go the right way on the collective at the right time when flipping out of inverted - went positive too early and powered it in.

I've been thinking about replacement models whilst saving up money to buy one. I have a few Raptor spares left that I would either sell off or keep depending on the replacement model. There are now three very different models in consideration

1. Align TRex 450SEv2

Pros
+ Could fly it in the back garden
+ Small
+ Light so shouldn't damage as much in a crash
+ Cheap parts it seems (or do other less "standard" bits break on these?

Cons
- Need to buy a 2.4GHz radio to suit (£)
- Unlikely to be able to learn Autorotations using this
- Shorter flight time
- Have to buy batteries up front - have fuel in stock
- Small so might not be good for learning "big" F3C moves

2. Raptor 30

Pros
+ Have engine & muffler
+ Known quantity
+ Bit bigger so better for more "distant" F3C type flying
+ Can use existing radio with just a couple of new servos so they all match
+ Longer flight time
+ Stability
+ Have some spares

Cons
- No driven tail
- More expensive to crash than the 450

3. Raptor 60

Pros
+ Presence and hovering ability
+ Better for large sky
+ Can use existing radio with new servos to match
+ Found one 2nd hand with engine for £150 needing only radio fitting
+ Autorotation unit

Cons
- It might be the cheapest to buy but one reasonable crash will nuke that
- Might be intimidating to fly

I'd describe my flying as at the "passable" stage. I can fly Figure-8s, circuits, hover in all orientations, do a passable stall turn. I've crashed three times this year - once due to an engine cut while going inverted (stuck clunk), one battery failure (dead NiCad) and the one above. I try to practice on the sim as much as possible and I'm fairly sure the recent crash was because I put positive collective in way too early (kinda like trying a loop without backing off the +ve collective).

So which do you reckon I should go for? Money as it is for most people is a bit of an issue right now, so purchase cost and getting flying are both important.

Cheers

Chris

i would go with the 50.theres not much differences in the size from a 50 to 60.600-620mm to 680mm.the parts are cheaper on the 50 and the fly well .the bigger the heli the more stable it will be but the parts are more to replace.

just my 2 cents worth

I would also g with a .50 but there are many more choices out that will give you a great flying heli. Take a look around before you settle on any specific one.......RonTeam MikadoUSA 480XXTreme, 550SX, 600SX, 700XXTreme, 800XXTreme!!

If money is an issue - TZ-V2 Frenzy .50 sized heli @ just under $219 for the kit. It's an awesome heli for the price. Just sift through the JS section http://runryder.com/f126p1/

Why would you have to go 2.4 if you got the 450 se v2?

Also, you can learn auto's with it, they are just harder.

But it is a lot less stable than a 50 bird.

IMHO, I would go with a 50 size machine. They are a ton of machines out there that are great to learn with. It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

If you have to ask:

500 size electric

50 size nitro

Making important decisions based on existing equipment will probably put you in the wrong direction. I just wait until I have the $$$ then pull the trigger.

Your mileage will of course, vary.

if i were in your shoes I'd sell off all the old equipment and save up for a 500/600 size electric (Mikado Logo 500/600, Outrage 550, Atom 500, Align 500/600, or equivalents).

batteries can be had cheap from hobbycity.com, the Zippy line of lipos...

a good charger will serve you well where ever you go in this hobby (Hyperion or Bantam are my favorites).

a 50-size electric will be easy to see, have good power, easy to set up, don't have to constantly retune a engine for changes in temp/elevation, less vibration and it's pretty much plug-in and fly.

if you want 60-size big, there are Align Trex 700's in the classifieds going for $500 shipped, or less if you negotiate. There are e-conversions available for these for if and when yuo want to go that route.

I really think electric models, assuming you can put up the money for batteries are the way to go these days.

There is a good deal in the electric classified on electric Logo 500, I would make the guy a resonable offer and see where it goes.

Thanks for some really fast feedback on the ideas above. I really wish I was living stateside and getting access to all these models at such good prices - I don't think I've even seen a Frenzy for sale over here in the UK.

Going through the comments here the consistent theme as expected is to get a 50 or 50 size electric. My main reason for not doing that is that getting a 50 glow model will cost me about double what each of the three options I outlined would cost which obviously means at least another month without being able to fly. I guess I was also hoping that because I don't aspire to any 3D work, only F3C, my power demands wouldn't be *quite* as high right now.

With ref to needing to go 2.4GHz for the TRex 450 (or any electric) I've been advised by some clubmates that you can get significant interference on 35MHz due to the proximity of Motor/Rx/ESC.

Ohhh this is such a hard decision - wisdom says a 50 is more efficient, but I really did enjoy flying my Raptor 30 "underdog" too.

Cheers
