Not everyone is looking forward to the R-66 (turbine)...Frank's business is incredible no doubt and a lot of people love his stuff...But I dunno...having flown them they just feel "cheap".When I fly I like to have a certain "peace of mind"...flying a 300Cb or Bell 206 or MD500 (as examples)...aircraft that were built for the demands of the military I know that the thing will take a beating and keep on flying. I've seen 206's and 500's that have been through hell but the pilot still made it home. And I've seen 300's reduced to little balls of wreckage because of pilot error and still they walked away.Robinsons offer no margin. Bottom line...they were built to be as light and inexpensive as possible. When in doubt...auto out |

But I dunno...having flown them they just feel "cheap". Ahhh, they ARE cheap. When you can get the same job done with a cheaper alternative, that is the way of the new world.
Most aircraft were not designed for pilot comfort or ease of flying, they were designed and made to get a job done.
Some aircraft even made to this day,you really have to be a pilot to fly them not just a button pusher. |

Just as the pocket sized HD camcorder made model AP photography possible, it's allowing R-44's to replace MD500's in countries that ban UAV's. |

I think a concern with the R's is the caution needed to avoid Low G's and the subsequent mast bump.Blade Thrashing Lessons: Enrol Here |

Which SUCKS!! Cause it ends up sacrificing the pilot and crew safety in the end!i fly R-22's for training, but it doesn't mean that i like them. They in fact do feel cheap and leave you with a small margin for error. Not to mention the crappy cyclic setup that the R's have. I HATE!! That thing!"what goes up must come down," hopefully in one piece! |

I took a ride in an R-44 last Saturday in Myrtle Beach. That thing was a vibrating pig. I can not imagine a camera mount in the world that would tolerate that platform unless I just happen to get in a lemon. I was looking out the side and could see the landing gear shaking. I wonder if these "news station" specials are balanced any better.Wayne Mann |
