250 tail problem
I bought a used 250 and the tail will not hold, I have tried 3 gyros, 2 servos, 2 receivers so its not the electronics. I am using a jr 9303 tx , I have tried all across the board for gyro gain and it will either wag or not hold. WTF I have built numerous helis and know that everything is set right. Could it be possible that the speed control could have an affect on the gyro performance? It is the only thing I haven't replaced.
Current setup
401/ align 420 tail
gain 55% (wagging like a dog)

Disassemble the tail grips and check the bearings for excessive locite. How many bearings do you have on each grip? The new grips have one bearing per side. The old one has two bearings per side. The tail issue was fixed with the one bearing per side.

Make sure the whole tail section is very smooth with no binding. You may need to disconnect every section of the tail assembly and loosen the screws abit starting from the tail hub back to the pushrod.

gyro
you gain is a little high it should be

26 gain
26 rate

no delay
no limit

the 420 servo isnt the best of servos with the gy 401 but will work

also dismantal the tail and rebuild it your self

AJ a friend of mine on RR went threw the same problem and it turn out to be his grub screw on the tail hub was loose,,, so check all screws...

hope this helps regards helinelly
if it broken.....glue the bast#$d...keep flying..i tell the wife my crashes cost £20! works for me

My tail was very bad, so I upgraded to the chinese weighted tail grips, metal tail gearbox. Then the DS420 died so I put in a Futaba S3154. I dropped the BEC voltage to 5.5v and now my tail is rock steady. I also have the metal control arm for the tail.
Are you using the 40mm batman blades or the straight ones? I use the batman blades, most people seem to find them better.

I just flew a 250 with a spartan gyro, this thing is the best I have seen a 250 fly. I have swore that the spartan wasn't worth it, boy, was I wrong. If you want a tail that holds, and the bearings aren't the problem, get a spartan/jr 3500 tail setup. also check that you dont have the ball link to tight on the tail linkage because they will pinch the ball and cause a wag.

I'd take that DS420 and find a nice deep hole, and toss it in. Deep enough that you won't be tempted to dig it back out.

I started out with a 420, thinking it would be a great servo. But I found out that mine would not move end to end, smoothly. Perhaps if I slammed the stick from side to side, but under normal circumstances it had a very notchy movement, almost as if it were designed to move end to end in on a few steps, not very small steps.

It made my 250 darn near impossible to hover and trim, let alone fly.

I replaced it with the only other servo I happened to have laying around at the time...an HS50 from Hitec. Yes, it's a cheap analog servo, no longer in favor with the Trex crowd, but on the other hand, it's FAST and cost me nothing.

That made a huge difference in the way my little 250 flies. The next step was to move the ball link IN on the arm. I had started out at 5mm, but that only let me get the gain on my 401 up to may 16 or 17, and the piro rate on this little bird was on the order of cyclone speed. At least ten full revolutions per second. I could have used it as a fan to cool people off at the field.

I moved the ball link in to 3mm out from center, was able to up my gain to around 35%, and have full control of the tail.

-----

Make sure your ESC is NOT in Governor mode. Set it to normal throttle mode. Governor mode can make all sorts of nasty habits with the tail.

Tail as well
My tail is kicking out to the right(tail in) and then back when I throttle up quick. I have the logictech 2100T and 3100G combo. It has been a great combo for my 450s. I have only had the 250 for a couple of weeks and have read about the old vs new tail. I tried to remove my tail blade grips to see if I had one or two bearings. I used the stock Align hex driver and it stripped the hex screws out when I tried to loosen them. Is there any other way to tell? I'd like to be able to cross that off my list as a possible issue.

Yes,get rid of the 420 right away.THings that will get your tail locked in tight: #1 mini tail servo,jr 3500,futaba 9257 align 520.#2 tail blades not longer than 37mm,even blades cut down to 30mm work.#3 a straight 3mm carbon tail control rod with out guides along the boom.My 250 holds like my 500 with these mods, and thats with the align 750 gyro.

Ok i got a 3500g servo and gy520 installed and carbon pushrod. Flew like dog s---. then crashed again. My servo ball was 9mm out and I have re-drilled it to 5mm out. It will not go any closer. Everything on the heli is silky smooth, can't figure out why it wags so bad. Gain was set to 25 percent on x9303 tx. Next flight I will try new shorter tail blades(mine are 40mm) and the new servo ball length and see how that does. Really disappointed and getting frustrated fast with this heli.Mark

I had a bad case of the 'bounces" on hard stops etc and for my instance I am saying it was the slop in the tail grips and slider.
(this bird also likes a very low gain no matter what the gyro :0)

I bought the whole Micro heli tail and discovered I didnt need it all -- just the grips and slider -- the stock arm works even :0) with the stock shafts.

So either that or Hemi 's mods will do you IMHO

Markus

Heres my tail now with an Align 600 gyro @ 19% gain - holds good

I reject your reality and substitute my own :0)

if you can't get the spartan/3500 combo to work, then, you have mechanical issues to contend with. This or you havent programmed the gyro correctly. try putting the ball link as close as possible to center of the servo horn. also, did you tighten the tail pitch lever too tight.

Well i tried it again today with the servo ball in as close as possible and new gyro/servo and it was pretty good. I am putting the heli on rotisserie now and strappingit down to avoid any more crashes. It seems to be doing pretty good now but the 520 gyro loses heading hold mode while running it. when I shut down the purple light is flashing meaning an error of losing center. I don't think the 520 likes to be ran at this low of a gain setting which is currently set to 35 percent. when this gyro was on my 600 it was at 85 percent and when I tried it lower it would lose center also. Might have to try a different gyro.Mark

Finally got it!!! Needed to make some gyro setup adjustments on the 520 to correct the centering problem, All is good now. I bought this heli used and in the future I will ask for a video of the heli actually flying so I know it will work. There is no way this heli would fly correctly the way it was sent to me,What seemed to be a good deal ended up costing me another $250 to make it fly right. Live and learn.Mark

First thing is to get a good tail servo, Some people have had good results with a micro but I didn't. I bought a Fut. 9257 and a GY520 gyro and made a carbon push rod for the tail. It still was crazy until I moved the tail servo ball in as far as I could get it which is 5mm out from center. Some other things I bought which were improvements but I don't feel are necessary are...
Align chinese weight tail grips
Align new bell crank ( longer )
Carbon tail blades
Metal belt pulleys front and rear

Other notes.. Gyro gain is 33 percent
Swash mix is 50,50,55

I like Trex's but i'm kind of dissapointed they released a bird with this many problems in the tail and hardware. I'm sure people wouldn't have minded to wait 2 or 3 months more for the issues to be ironed out.
Buying a 520 gyro and a 9257 servo to fix the tail issue seems like a lot of $, especially when you consider it cost almost as much as the 250 itself just for the tail setup.
I looked at the 250 but i think i've decided on the gaui for a future purchase.

I agree, This shouldn't have been a problem but then again I have seen numerous post that some people had no problems right out of the box with stock electronics....I don't get that. One thing that is misleading on a trex 250 video I saw on youtube was bert was describing his heli setup and said he was using ds420 on the tail, But if you look closely it is a mini size servo not micro.Mark
